Bowling Bits
by EDDIE SILVERBOARD
AJCC Mens’ League
Before we go into the bowling
bit, I’ve got two announcements
to make to you fans out there in
Bagel-land—number one is to tell
you folks to try to memorize the
nicknames of the characters
usually mentioned herein be
came I’ve been warned that a
very enterprising insurance sales
man has been using this column
to get prospects and 1 don’t want
lie should bother you, because
number two this here author is
now in training for the same pro
fession (I told you I was going
in for more serious writing, didn’t
I?) and I’m going to call on these
fellows myself in the near fu
ture—ao if you see any more full
names here after today, you can
bet the guy is ABSOLUTELY un-
msurable- Oh, thanks for asking
— the name of my future em
ployer is The Guardian Life In
surance Co. of America and don’t
you forget it—Mama says I’ve
gone from over-writing to under
writing—ain’t she the great
est? . . .
Top man for the week was the
professor, Harold Maisel, who
finally practiced what he teach-
ed and went to the head of the
class with a 221-616 mark . . .
Herb Selk, the selk-made man,
used a 226 for a foundation (he’s
in construction) and built a fine
607 triplex . . .
Another Herb name of Gold
with arm to match spun a 205^
201 to wind up with a 591 ball
of yam (which he hustles for a
living) . . . Mr. Justice, Dave
Eisenberg, had his day in court
with a 210 single and a 564 judg
ment . . . The league’s Space
expert (he’s supervisor of the
largest parking lot syndicate
here) name of Bill Sullivan (don’t
be so surprised—lots of Jewish
guys are named Bill) dented the
pins instead of the fenders for
a big 206 singleton . . . Fred Ben-
amy found time between the
feeding hour and diapering per
iod (that family all looks the
same age) to father a neat 227-
577 set . . . Sid Leventhal leveled
a 212 . . . The only Silverman in
the league who wears less than
a 40 inch belt, name of Robert,
cleaned up with a Zeppy 224
single (everybody gets a plug this

week) . . . Hank the Tank un
loaded a 237 and a 153 back to
back and I’m glad glad glad! . .
Milt Pergament insured his
name here with a 204 rider .
Richard Carl, the Drown Prince
of Bowling, also bowled he
shouldn’t have.
Mr. and Mrs. league
It was definitely Ladies’ Nite
in this league as only one man
managed to hit the 200 mark and
even that was the first time for
him to go over 200 since last
spring at the golf course at Pied
mont Park — ain t that right,
Aaron Cohen? . . . Oh, yes—one
other male did have a 196 single,
but he usually bowls about like
the girls, so George Singer will
not be mentioned after all—he’s
been getting too much space any
way . . .
Probably the mam reason for
such bad bowliitg on the part of
the men was the fact that the
report on smoking and cancer had
just been released, and the gyys
were all busy trying to bum cig-
arets from them that had some—
the question ‘Are you smoking
more and enjoying it less” now
really means something, no? . . .
As for the girls, Grace Baum-
rind gracefully baumed the pins
for a 180-510 series to lead the
females . . . Charlotte Rosenberg,
who can beat her Harold at
everything but billiards (only be
cause he has his own cue stick,
tho) came in second with a great
190 single and a 487 set . . .
Gloria Berke gloried with a 196
single—she can beat her Herbert
at everything, including billiards
. . . Carol Welson caromed to a
pretty 186 game . . . Mighty Myra
Medintz, who always has her
sense of humor in perfect shape,
found her sense of timing was
just right also and smiled with
a timely 185 bon mot . . . Sur
prise of the week—better make
that year—no, let’s make that
century—surprise of a lifetime
was Amy Appelbaum’s 172 game
the first time after being re
leased from the hospital where
the pretty doll was in traction
for a week—straightened up her
self and her game at the same
time—you can have her doctor’s
name by calling her home—if you
can get the line—phone’s been
busy every time I, dial it! . . .
Selma Singer was on her way
to a big single game, but her ball
is so weak that every time some
body opened the door to come
into the building the wind would
blow her ball off course—maybe
some windless nite she’ll get that
200 game ... As this is being
written, the snow is falling and
Alvin Greenberg is getting rid of
more tire chains, thanks to the
guy he hired to put on a Snow
Dance — now what I’d like to
know is do any of you readers
know anybody who can do a Fire

Dance—if business doesn’t pick
up at The Leader, man, I could
use one—there hasn’t been a
good arson expert in town since
Mama Silverboard gave it up!
(And if Hyman Meltz is reading
this—I’m only kidding!).
That’s the tenth flame—see you
in the alleys next week!
