Nathan Horowitz
Nathan Borowitz, 78, retired
merchant, died Sunday, Jan. 19.
The funeral was conducted
Monday, Jan. 20, in Blanchard’s
Chapel, Rabbi Harry H. Epstein
and Cantor Joseph Schwartzman
officiated. Burial was in Green
wood Cemetery.
Mr. Borowitz and his wife, the
former Rae Finklestein, operated
the popular Trick and Novelty
Shop for several decades. /''
He was a native of Russia and
had lived in Atlanta about 40
years. He was a member of
Ahavath Aehim Synagogue and
the Progressive Club.
Surviving also are: .daughters,
Rena Thaler of Lake Worth, Fla.;
Mrs. Ivan Klebanoff of New York,
and Mrs. Alfred Furst of Jack
sonville, Fla.; sons, Haskell David
son and Jonas Davidson, both of
Jacksonville; sisters, Mrs. Harry
Lubitz, Mrs. Jennie Stein and
Mrs. Morris Spatz, all of New
York, and Mrs. Paul Gilbert of
Great Neck, Long Island, and sev
eral grandchildren.
Sidney Rosenzweig
Sidney William Rosenzweig,
61, owner of the Bargain Corner
supermarket, died January 13
The funeral was held January
15 at Sipple’s Mortuary with
Rabbi A. I. Rosenberg, Rabbi
David Raab and Cantor A. Ra-
nani officiating. Interment was
in Bonaventure Cemetery.
A native of Romania, Mr
Rosenzweig had been a resident
of Savannah for 44 years. He
opened the Bargain Corner in
1936.
He was a member of Congre
gation B. B Jacob, a member
and past president of the Sa
vannah Chapter of the Zionist
Organization of America.
Mr. Rosenzweig was president
of the Chevra Kadisha of Agu-
dath Achim Synagogue for more
than 12 years and was treasurer
of the Savannah Hebrew Day
School.
He was a member of Mizra-
chi, Clinton Lodge No. 54, F.&
A M., Scottish Rite Masons and
Alee Temple of the Shrine.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Lena Feinberg Rosenzweig; two
sons, Ramon Rosenzweig and
Marvin Rosenzweig; a daugh
ter, Mrs. Joseph Abelow of
Brookline, Mass.; a brother,
Jack Rosenzweig of Manches
ter, England; a sister, Mrs. Vic
tor Liebowitz of the Bronx,
N.Y., and 10 grandchildren.
Rabbi L. I). Gross
BRENTWOOD, Calif. (JTA) -
Rabbi Louis D. Gross, founder
and publisher of The Jewish Ex
aminer, a weekly newspaper pub
lished in Brooklyn, N. Y., until
1956, died here this week at the
age of 78. He had also served as
spiritual leader of Union Temple
in Brooklyn. The Jewish Exam-,
iner was merged with the Amer
ican Hebrew eight years ago. It
is now known as the American
Examiner. Bom in Chicago, Rabbi
Gross was graduated from the
Hebrew Union College and the
University of Cincinnati. He was
active for many years in raising
funds for Palestine.

PHILADELPHIA (JTA)— The
governments of the United States
and Israel joined Sunday in tri
bute to the late David J. Gaiter,
editor of thp Jewish Exponent,
Mho won national renown as a
writer and publicist on Jewish
affairs. Messages from leading
figures in the two governments
were read at the dedication of a
(hapel at Gratz College here.
The chapel was built and furn
ished bv friends of Mr. Gaiter.
Myer Feinstein, Philadelphia
philanthropist, chairman of the
chapel building fund, presided at
the exercises. Memorial tributes
were delivered by Judge Nochem
S. Winnet, president of the Fed
eration of Jewish Agencies; Dr.
Solomon Grayzel, editor of the
Jewish Publication Society and
Mrs. William B. Lakritz, Mr.
Gaiter’s daughter. The speakers
included Dr Elazar Goelman,
dean of Gratz College; Benson
M Sehambelan, president of the
Gratz College Alumni Association
and Mark Obner, president of the
Gratz Student Association.
NEW YORK (JTA)—The anti-
Semitic Tacuara movement in
Argentina has split into two
wings, one group embracing Com
munist orientation while the Ta
cuara leader, Alberto Ezcurra,
insists on pursuing the organiza
tion’s policy of priority on anti-
Semitism, New York Times re
ported from Buenos Aires this
week.
The dispatch noted that Tac
uara had undergone one earlier
split, when some members form
ed an ultra-right-wing faction,
calling itself the Guardia Res-
tauradora Nacionalista. The major
Tacuara movement has constant
ly boasted of its overt anti-Sem
itism and its allegiance to Hitler
ite principles.

24 years old at the time and had
'more power than I could
handle.''
Wilhelm Doering, lormer chief
of the Criminal Police in Sieburg,
near Bonn, was sentenced to six
\ ears’ imprisonment by a Bonn
court in November 1962. He was
convicted on charges of aiding
and abetting the murder of 669
Russian Jews and 16 mentally
retarded children during the 1941-
42 period, when th^ 46-year-old
defendant was an SS lieutenant in
charge of an extermination squad.
Doering, who also insisted that
"there was no judicial standard
by which I could measure my
actions,’' denied that he had per
sonally killed anyone. He said all
executions were carried out by
his squad on orders of his su
periors. He admitted he had been
present at an initial execution
of 150 Russian Jews in Roslawl,
in November 1941. In January
1942, his unit killed 100 Jews
from the village of Borisov.
Recalling the murders, the de
fendant testified that none of the
victims resisted. “They caused us
no trouble. They all went quietly
to the edge of a trench they had
dug,” he testified. He added that
“it got on my nerves because
there were women and children
among them.”
Mrs. David Lereah
Mrs. David Lereah, a former At
lantan, died Saturday, Jan. 18.
The funeral was conducted
Monday, Jan. 20, in New York
City.
A native of Turkey, Mrs. Le
reah came to America about 50
years ago. She lived in Atlanta
for several years.
Surviving are her daughter,
Mrs. Ned J. Cohen of Atlanta,
and Mrs. Joseph Jalles of Bu
enos Aires; sons Ely Lereah of
Atlanta and Joseph Lereah of
New York City, and twelve
grandchildren.
Hoard Members Chosen

Jac H. Rothschild, Columbus,
Ga., was elected Chairman of the
Southeastern Regional Advisory
Board of the Anti-Defamation
League at its tenth annual meet
ing in Atlanta, Sunday, January
19. Mr. Rothschild, an executive
of the David Rothschild Company
of Columbus, has long been ac
tive in the work of ADL, a human
relations organization which last
year observed its 50th anniver
sary.
in accepting the leadership of
the Board, Mr. Rothschild stated,
"‘It affords me great satisfaction
to play a role in working toward
ADL’s goals of a secure democ
racy for all Americans. I hope
that I can contribute in the
coming year toward alleviating
some of the tensions which exist
among the citizens of our state
and area.”
Also elected as vice chairmen
were Marvin Cohn, Gadsden,
Ala.; Sylvan Meyer, Gainesville,
Ga.; Leon Campell, Greenville,
S. C.; and A. J, Koblentz, Chat
tanooga; William Bremen, Atlanta,
was re-elected as treasurer and
Monroe Schlactus, Atlanta, as
secretary.
Joe Ziff, Jasper, Ala.; Paul
Tenenbaum, Dalton, Ga.; Henry
Yaschik, Charleston-; and Sam
Dattel, Memphis, were elected
icpresentatives-at-large for their
respective states.
The above will serve on the
Committee with Abe Goldstein,
Atlanta, honorary chairman; and
honorary vice-chai r m e n Leo
Bearman, Memphis; Donald Ober-
dorfer, Atlanta; Dr., William
Wexler, Savannah; and Simon
Weil, Nashville.
Also elected to the executive
committee are: Dr. Nathan Blass,
Edward Elson, Dr. Irving Gold
stein, Ben Hyman, Sam Massell,
