Mary Lynn Baum
Among Metropolitan
Ballerina Winners
Mary Lynn Baum of Montgomery,
daughter of former Atlantan, Mrs.
Samuel P. Baum, was one of the
winners of the Metropolitan Opera
auditions for budding ballerinas held
recently. Mary Lynn received a $100
award.
The petite 15-year-old is the grand
daughter of Mrs. I. F. Stem of At
lanta. "Mary Lynn always gives her
best,” v said Mrs. Sterne after the
auditions, “Perhaps this determina
tion and her ability to follow direc
tions, added to her natural talent,
had much to do with her being se
lected for the award.”
Mary Lynn, a 10th form student
at the Montgomery Academy, has
been studying dancing for more than
eight years. She is presently with
the Montgomery Civic Ballet.
Though dancing naturally plays a
big part in her life, Mary Lynn is
also an honor student, editor of her
school paper and an avid summer
camper.
This is the first time the Met
ropolitan tryouts have been held
outside New York. Judges were
Dame Alicia Markova, director of
the Met ballet, and John Gutman,
assistant to General Manager Ru
dolf Bing.
