Highlight of the week in bowling
circles was "The Return of the
Thin Man"—no, not a late late
movie title, but my r ay of announc
ing the fact that Subway Silverman

of rest while he tried to build up

single to prove that he's quite re

back, Subweigh! .
Rig game of the nite was whacked
out by Subway’s opposite number,
strapping Leon Cohen, the Cohen
who collects people < he’s the guy
who catches the bill dodges' with
a big 210-575 collection of pins . . .
Other noticeable high singles were
Sid Berger’s 208 barbecueing, Stan
Floersheim’s shining 217, and baby
manufacturer Sol Wolkin with a—

pins . . Well, there’s finally an
Appelbaum who can really bowl—

that' . . . Speaking of A1 Appel
baum reminds me of matzoh balls
• you ever see him bowl, man?) and
that reminds me that when this issue
hits the street it’ll be right at Pass-
over time, so let me wish you all a
Ilappy Season’s Greetings with no
indigestion, and for you sweet grand
mas 'hello there Mama and Char-
ney>, and all you dolls who sweat
it out in the kitchen, the lightest
of matzoh balls this year! . . . Now
let’s go see what’s cooking in the
Mr. and Mrs. League.
Mr. and Mrs. League
It wasn’t too good a nite. The
author of this here column had a 399
series. So what better time could be
picked to tell you about the Show
of Shows the Mr. and Mrs. Club is
staging April 5-6-7 at the Ahavath
Achim Synagogue, a powerhouse
play called "Gray Flannel Tallis.”
. . . ‘Get this load of talent, will
you? . . . Paul Landis, the South’s
answer to Flo Ziegfeld, is the writer
and producer . . . Hildegarde Tour-
now, the dancing Tornado, is direct
ing, which right away makes the
whole thing a success . . . Frantic
Frances Wallace is at the keyboard,
which makes all the singers sound
like stage veterans . . . Herbert
Karp is set designer, so it’ll look
like Broadway but even better . . .
A peek at the rehearsals was enough
to make this writer’s press card
worth its weight in gold (and I’m
going to BUY a ticket anyway—how
Diane gets in will be her busi
ness) . . .
Just a few of the singing acts
that will knock you out of the seats
will be Gail Goldstein, who could
carry a 190 average if she bowled
the way she carries a tune . . .
Betty Handmacher, who makes
Betty Johnson sound like Rochester
. . . Estelle Karp, with one of her
greatest performances . . . Gerry
Gilman, with the voice of an angel
. . . Barbara Weiss, the 196 bowler,
who should bowl as well as she
handles herself on stage, which is
practically perfect . . .
Comedienne Myra Medintz, who is
actually funnier than Coleman Med
intz thinks he is, which is as strong
a recommendation as I can think
of . . . There’s a trio of Bakery
girls in this play who will really
put the icing on the cake with their
act, namely Timmie Silver, Shirley
Goldwasser, and Sonia Sifen . . .
There will be two chorus lines, in
cluding the prettiest bunch of cuties
ever gathered together on one stage,
and also a male chorus line which
is beyond description (that’s a nice
way of saying that what I write
about them would lie censored any
way, so why waste time) . . . One
of the outstanding acts will be the
piano playing of Mimi Alperin, so
look forward to that . . .
Some of the male parts will be
Julian Turk in one of the lead roles,
and Dr. Jack Russo, the Tooth Den-
ist, who will yank you out of your
blues with his antics . . . Pete Mor
ris also has one of the top roles,
and fills it to the brim . . . Another
routine that will bring down the
house is staged by the trio of Don
Diamond, Ralph Sacks, and Larry
Greenberg, and if the house fell on
Larry’s head he wouldn’t know the
difference anyway—keep your eyes
on him . . . Phil Kaplan and Jerry

Paller are also to be noticed, and
of course Bobby Kogan, the Jewish
Ed Sullivan, who will MC the whole
affair . . .
There’s a cast of at least 50, and
I wish I could mention every one
of them, but space is limited what
with all the ads Adolph is getting
rich on, so just can’t name them all
. . Just don’t forget one thing—
all proceeds go to the wonderful
Youth activities of the Synagogue,
and you couldn’t do a better thing
with your time and money than sup
port the great work that is being
done for these kids . . . Oh, I’ve
left out one of the guys everyone
will be talking about—Icky Oren
stein Ls the chief usher, and if you’re
as short as I am, you’ll be talking
about him after he sits you right
behind some 6 foot giant with tall
hair! Bring a pillow, Yukie! See
you in Schule!
