Meeting A Cardinal...
Richard Cardinal Cushing of Bos
ton recently tokl the student txxly
of St. Peter’s College in Jersey City
that “kindness and love are more
important than scholarship,” thus
coming quite close to the chassidic
view of our own Reb Israel Baal
Shem Tov of blessed memory
Does this make the Cardinal a
chassid?
I am reminded in this connection
of a remark the Cardinal made
when I had the privilege of meeting
him at a reception some months
ago in honor of Augustine Cardinal
Bea, the Christian tzaddik who was
prime mover in the effort to have
the Ecumenical Council aprrove a
resolution absolving Jews of guilt
in the death of Christ and banishing
anti-Semitism from Christian hearts
and hearths. Ilabbi Marc Tannen-
baum of the American Jewish Com
mittee introduced me to the Boston
Cardinal as the gathering of dis
tinguished churchmen of all faiths
was waiting in awe and expectation
for the arrival of Cardinal Bea. As
I was shaking his hand in depar
ture, Cardinal Cushing remarked he
was “the best rabbi Boston Jews
have."
Cardinal Cushing, in this writer’s
humble opinion, is neither a chassid
nor a rabbi but a fine human being,
who never permits the dignity of
his office to deflect him from human
interest. He is even big enough to
occasionally subordinate the sacred
to the mundane. Recently at a press
conference he was asked what he
thought about harnessing married
laymen for the deaconate, and his
answer was that if that happened
all the bishops and priests would do
all the work while ail the deacons
would have all the fun.
These are the words of a man
who in his striving for heaven has
not lost touch with earth.
Footnote to History
One hundred and sixty seven
years ago a Jew, Jacob Isaacs of
Richmond, Virginia, tried to inter
est President George Washington in
taking the salt out of sea water.
This interesting bit of American
history was recalled recently by
president Abraham Feinberg of the
Israel Bond Organization. He made
the disclosure at the Israel Bond
conference in Miami in connection
with the recent proposal by Pres
ident Lyndon B. Johnson for Amer
ica and Israel to join hands in the
use of nuclear fission as a means
of solving the problem of desalting
sea water.
In Washington’s days, the matter
came before the State Department
which has jurisdiction over ships.
The problem of finding unsalted
drinking water for sea voyages was
a difficult one in those days. For
tunately the State Department at
the time was headed by Thomas
Jefferson, who was keenly interest
ed in science. Mr. Jefferson ar
ranged for a party of American sci
entists to study the Isaacs invention,
but it was found to offer no sub
stantial improvement over known
methods. Jefferson, however, felt
that the experiment has been worth
while, since it plainly demonstrated
that ships could supply themselves
with drinking water for thirsty pas
sengers.
Water was indeed high on the
agenda of the conference, with U. S.
Senator Ribicoff and Israel’s Min
ister of Finance Sapir harping on
the theme in a manner quite rem
iniscent of biblical mention. And so,
in one way or another, water kept
running literally and figuratively
throughout the conference sessions.
The problem of desalting sea
water is one of major challenge to
the world today. Actually, of course,
it is not a shortage of water per se.
As the verse goes, there is
Water, water everywhere
But not a drop to drink.
The oceans, surpassing land in
magnitude and perhaps mystery as
well, are full of water, but the prob
lem is to get the salt out. Nor is
the challenge of recent making. In
fact, the problem of sweetening "the
bitter waters” seemed to have
troubled our ancestors of biblical
days.
The success of the Israel Bond
campaign, whose goal for 1964 is $85
