PLACEBOS: THEN AND
NOW
Placebos have little impor
tance in the modern medical
armamentarium. The word
placebo is from the Latin, “I
will please.” It is, therefore, a
medicine given to please the
patient.
Patients always want a treat
ment that produces quick re
sults. Doctors have always
known enough about drugs and
drastic action to meet the de
mands of the patient They
have prescribed concocjjons to
produce obvious effects such as
vomiting, sweating or purging.
Phlebotomy, or blood-letting,
has been a popular treatment
for centuries, much of blood
letting being in the nature of a
placebo.
Today, doctors of medicine
rarely resort to use of the
placebo. They may offer a
sugarpill to satisfy a patient
temporarily while they are
checking on diagnostic proce
dures. But physicians now have
definite knowledge of scientific
truth regarding physiology,
psychology, bacteriology, im
munology, chemistry, hygiene,
sanitation, dietetics, and so on.
The modern doctor is inclined
to speak frankly to his patient.
People apprehensive about their
health are likely to rash to the
doctor for quick relief.
Even though a placebo may
have a psychological effect, it
is not important in modern
medical treatment. The patient
of today is urged to put his
trust in the truth, based on his
doctor's knowledge and under
standing.
