Noting that the existence of the
pamphlet had been acknowledged in
the United Nations Commission on
Human Rights a week ago by the
Ukrainian representative to that
body, Prof. Peter E. Nedbaik), the
Freiheit declared: “It must be
stated openly and clearly.”
Asserting that publication of a
pamphlet like “Judaian Without
Embellishment" cannot be excused
on the grounds that it was part of
an over-all Soviet campaign against
all religions, the editorial asked:
“How is it possible that such a
booklet against religion, in this
case against the Jewish religion,
should contain such caricatures?"
PARIS, (JTA) — Criticism of the
Soviet Union for publication by
a Ukranian Academy of Science of
a virulently anti-Semitic parmphlet
spread to French groups usually
friendly to the Soviet Union. L’Ex-
press, a left-wing weekly which
usually supports the official Soviet
line, published a severely critical
two-page review of "Judaism With
out Embellishment.”
The newspaper has a circulation
of 250,000 mostly among France’s
leading intellectuals. It reprinted
three of the cartoons from the Kiev
booklet, describing them as “wor
thy of Der Sturmer”—the news
paper published by Julius Streich-
er, the most rabid of the Nazi anti-
Semites. L’Express also discussed
the latest anti-Jewish developments
in Russia, describing in detail the
“economic trials” in which many
Jews have been condemned to death
and executed as “innocent scape
goats.”

newspaper, also reviewed the So
viet' pamphlet, asking: "Can Jews
read without fear the book printed
by the Ukrainian Academy, in
which synagogues are desicribed as
dens of black-marketeers and in
which the cartoons recall those
published by the Nazis during the
war?”
Other French dailies and weeklies
also discussed the pamphlet, stress
ing particularly the stand taken by
the "Neue Presse,” organ of the
Jewish section of the French Com
munist party, which broke away
from Communist discipline to ex
press “shock” about the Kiev
