hearing of his fathers death.
"Momma, why do they do this
to us'.' What did we ever do to
them?"
"Janos." she answered. "We
don't know why God made
such beasts, who know only
how to rob and kill, but we do
know that if he made such men
He must have had a reason.
"Reason! What reason was
there for them to kill Pap pa
What reason was . . .? and
then he began to cry again.
_ As the second night closed
about them tne' people were-
no longer quiet. The myriad
sounds of suffering, the grind
ing hunger, the strain of
standing or lying so long in
one, position, continued to be
heard all night, adding their
voices to the continuing Jew
ish lamentation of the Hitler
era.
In the morning another stop
was made, and again moro
people were shoved into their
car. Now there was even a
shortage of foot space as the
guards kicked shins and but
tocks to make room for the
frightened new arrivals. Jan
os's mother nudged him. "List
en," she said, "no matter what
happens. I want you to under
stand one thing. Your father is
dead, but he lives in another
world. This world where Ger
mans march about is what
God has created for us to live
in temporarily before going on.
"Yes, but if God is so merci
ful, as you always say. why
wasn’t the future world given
to us right aw^y? Why do we
have to go through this now?
What are we supposed to do—
be happy about this?"
“There is no happiness." she
answered, "hut there is some
thing. There is something to
live for."
"Live? I would rather be
dead." She slumped against the
wall of the car and was quiet.
During the day snow fell. By
night the pain oi' the cold made
-them forget their hunger. Jan
os's mother 'felt weak, hardly
able to speak. Later—no one
ever told him how much—as
Janos Jeaned against her to
sleep she said quietly, almost
inaudible, “Listen, it doufcn’t
always have to be like this.”
He fell asleep.
He tried to make them let
go but they wouldn’t. Then he
woke up and saw that two
men, gaunt face and tired,
were gently lifting him up.
They took the coat, spread it
out over his mother and then
slipped it over her head. Thev
mumbled a prayer.
■^ears later, he was again to
be awakened on cold winter
nights by the cries of a fitiul
sleep — his daughter’s. He
would get out of his warm bed
and walk into the child’s bed
room. There, sitting on her bed
he chatted with her about what
they would do tomorrow.
