L. S. Hexter, at that time Ex
ecutive Secretary of the At
lanta YMHA, requested that
“at least twelve of the finest
and best boys in Atlanta" be
gathered together for the for
mation of the first Atlanta AZ-
A chapter. There were in ex
istence in the country at that
time thirteen active, perma
nent chapters.
Evidently, there w a s no
dearth of this exemplary type
of young manhood in Atlanta
- because four years later, in
1930, there is recorded for BB-
YO posterity twenty-four such
people who were to become
the first, and charter mem
bers of the AZA-134 Atlanta
chapter. Charter members, ini
tiated in 1930, consisted of
Sam Alterman, Joe Blass,
Mace Cohen, Leo Frankel, Ed
ward Gavron, Nathan Gersh-
on, Joseph Glazer, David Gold
stein, Irving Greenberg, Leo
nard Greenbaum, Ralph Hill
man, Reuben Kessler, Hyman
King, Louis Klein. Isador Ku-
niansky, Sidney Parks, Milton
Rauzin, Alfred Rosenthal, Saul
Schacter, Sidney Silver, Izzy
Tendrich, Albert Ungar, Ed
ward Vajda and Simon Wend-
er.
AZA-134 was chartered on
September Hi, 1930, with Hen
ry A. Alexander and later L.
J. Levitas serving as the-first
advisors; and Dr. Joseph A.
Glazer as the first Aleph Go-
dol (President.) Mr. Levitas
continued as advisor until his
formal retirement—from—AZAr
twenty-five years later.
In 1931 Judge Joseph From-
berg, past President of District
5 B’nai B'rith, sparked the
Charleston AZA chapter, and
by strange coincidence, the
Atlanta AZA chapter number,
reversed—AZA 143, became
the Charleston number. A
friendly rivalry has existed
through the years between
these two vibrant, spirited
chapters. Karl Karesh was the
first Aleph Godol of Charles
ton AZA 143. Ben Berendt was
the second Aleph Godol. Now,
thirty-three years later, Ben's
son, Gerald, is the Aleph Go
dol of the same chapter his
father served.
Maier Triest was the first
Advisor to Charleston 143. His
chapter advisorship was the
fore-runner of years of com
munity activity. He is Past
President*of Charleston's Dan
Lodge of B’nai B’rith and past
Secretary and past Treasurer
of District 5. He is at the pres
ent time Senior Past President
of Congregation Beth Elohim;
Treasuser of the Charleston
Chamber of Commerce; Chair
man of the Charleston Count\
Board of Education; member
of the Board of St. Frances
Xavier Hospital, but he is best
known in these parts as the
man who shared honors with.
