thers, too dulled to steal. The heat
was not so much oppressive as
solid, a part of the landscape like
the trees and the drowsy cattle
huddled in the noon-time shade of
a solitary oak. The farm was off
the main stream of traffic, but as
the temperature lowly mounted
past the 100 mark, the still clarity
of the air was wrenched and shat
tered into shimmering shards.

Some people are born with the
urge to do something, anything
about a given situation, and they
react in this fashion when sensible
persons simple reconnoiter and de
cide to leave Well enough alone.
My heart ached for the goats, lock
ed in a dark, hot prison, without,
water, and what was worse, vvith-
nttt freedom. Logic to the winds, 1
liberated the goats. The goats of
the shed, leaping blithely over and
around their liberator, stopping
only to nibble a tasty bit of the
New York Times and the pansies
in my flower-bed. (Jut they went
into the wide world, bent on re
establishing normal relationships
with other goats wherever they
might be, with never a thought
to their humane, and by this time,
stunned keeper.
We had eighty acres, our neigh
bor on the lett 32(1. and on our
right, the St. Ctoix river. It goats
were interested in swimming that
would have ended the whole thing
light there. As it was, 1 chased
goats lrom one end of the four
hundred acres to the other, through
corn and soy beans, up peas and
tomatoes, down garlic and onions,
around duck ponds and feeding
troughs, behind midden and hay
stack aided only by neighboring
children come to watch the show.
Thoughtfully, they would hand me
a piece of rope as I caught the
goats, one by one, all forty-four
of them. One lady goat was en-
ciente, and had stopped in her
merry chase to acid four more goats
to the world.
It took us only a week to dis
cover that there was more to goat's
milk than meets the eye. Like al
most any other worthwhile en
deavor. you need more than youth
ful enthusiasm and a book. The
stock dealer happened to be a man
who also made his livelihood with
honor. W’c were able to return the
goats (48 by then) to his loving
care, and astute business sense. 1
understand that he sold them to a
Syrian who in turn shipped them
to one of the Arab lands where they
were welcomed with such fanfare
a; a gift from ft iends in America,
and then re-sold at fantastic prices
to the.fellahin in Egypt and Jor
dan.
