The industrial processing of min
erals, especially for the export
market, has received major impetus
from Israel Bond allocations. These
include the reactivation of the
Dead Sea Works for the produc
tion of potash, bromine and other
salts and chemicals: the expansion
of the giant plant of Fertilizers and
Chemicals, Ltd. (now Phosphates
and Chemicals at Haifa Bay; the
construction of the Timna copper
processing plant at King Solomon's
copper mines near Elath: the re-
activiation of the oil refineries at
the new development areas in :
Negev.
An economist will tell you
Israel is able to redeem ];•
Bonds because industrial prod
tion is increasing more than
percent annually, ■ because agr
tural output is growing at the i
of more than 15 percent per >.
because exports have risen fr
$70,000,000 in 1951, when the i
Israel Bonds were sold, to $4::

In the early days of the Israi !
FEW MANUFACTURING PLANTS, such as this show
shoe factory, have been established by Israel Bond in
vestments. This plant is located at Kibbut Neet Mor-
dechai. which is also noted for growing apples and pro
ducing bottled apple juice. As Israel's economy expands,
both agricultural and industrial projects grow side by
side.
Haifa: the construction of the

In the historic sense, when the
State ot Israel was established, the
House of Israel was redeemed. In
the human sense, a million and a
quarter immigrants have returned
to the r ancient homeland. But for
many of them their first "home”
was a tent, a lean-to or a hut.
Today, the last vestiges of the
“maabarot” are disappearing, end
ing an unavoidable chapter of tem
porary housing tor immigrants. As
a result of a vast housing pro
gram undertaken with Israel Bond
resources over the past twelve
years, more than 350.00(1 perman
ent housing units, costing $4,500
each, must be put up, mostly in
Bond campaign it was often said
that one could not determine tin
extent to which sentiment intlu-
enced the prospective purchaser ol
the Bonds as against the hard facts
and figures of economic reality
There can be nothing more rcai
than the payment of 150 cents on
the dollar by the State of Israel oil
its matured Israel Bonds. Yet who
can deny that within this act ol
redemption is stored as much sen
timent and emotion as in the most
eloquent essay on the aspirations
and central purpose of the estab
lishment of the State of Israel. In
demonstrating the stability of Is
rael. Israel Bonds have served to
provide a historic rendezvous for
the realist and the sentimentalist
about the future of the Jewish
State.
