fluence, was exerted by the
Academy, and fine young
American Jewish couples be
gan to send their children to
the M. H. A. These were ordi
nary American Jews and yet
they were extraordinary. For
the most part, they were once-
a-year Jews who paid addi
tional visits to the Synagogue
on the occasion of a Bar Mitz-
vah, a wedding or a funeral.
Shmiras Shabbos was well
known among them, more in
the breach than in the observ
ance. Some had kosher homes,
hui—treife stomachs: some, not
even that much. But they sent
their children nevertheless to
the Academy, in greater and
greater numbers.
Slowly, a marked change be
gan to show itself. The prophet
long ago foresaw that “a little
child shall lead them.” The
Academy child became the
strongest religious influence
on the scene, notwithstanding
the number of rabbis in the
city's several synagogues. He
wouldn’t eat.
The Southern Child
In order to measure this in
fluence, one must carefully
understand the southern Jew
ish child. He’s not raised by his
Momie but his Mamie. House
hold servants cater to his every
whim and call him “Master
Yankeleh” in the really aristo
cratic Southern home.
Today, Memphis is a city of
ba’alei Tshuva. It is fashion
able in Memphis to keep a
kosher home. The “thing to
do” is to send your child to the
Academy for his education.
And one of the liveliest, most
spirited groups in the city is
comprised of the men and
women whose body and soul
is intertwined with that of the
Memphis Hebrew Academy.
No group works harder or ac
complishes more for itself or
for the ideals of Torah educa
tion than the Academy.
And yet, perhaps, there is
another area where credit is
due for the strong atmosphere
of Yiddishkeit that prevails at
the Bluff City. There is some-
thing fortunately peculiar
about the city of Memphis,
Tennessee. At the turn of the
century, perhaps a meshulach
was here who was treated nice
ly and in gratitude, he blessed
this city. Perhaps G-d heard
that blessing and smiled upon
the broad, high, flat plateau,
giving it His blessings.
The Hebrew ’Academy
Quite apart from the influ
ence of the Memphis Hebrew
Academy, and years before its
inception, a wealthy Memphis
Jew built himself a Shabbos
house. The affluent American
family gets itself a second car.
The affluent observant Jewish
family in Memphis got itself
a second home — one for ex-
