Mr. Levitan wearing a high
black hat, and formal tails, as
sisting in the officiating of the
Torah Service. He spoke an
impeccable English, having
spent several years in the
United States during World
War II, when he fought with
the Allies as a U. S. soldier
and attained U. S. citizenship.
We arranged to meet the fol
lowing day in synagogue, and
afterwards my wife and I
would join him and his family
for Shabbat lunch at his home.
The Great Synagogue is the
religious life for
Copenhagen^ - —ahd therefore~
Denmark’s — 6.500 Jews (all
of whom live in the capital).
On the way to synagogue, my
wife and I somehow veered
from the correct path, but were
saved by the city’s kosher but
cher who happened to be walk
ing on the same street at the
time. AVhen we spotted each
other's talis bag, a mental
wave length passed from his
tails to mine, and an immed
iate connection was made.
But just as I thought the day
was saved, his Danish tongue,
unsuccessfully followed by
Yiddish, had me thinking that
we were still in a quandry.
“Well," I consoled myself, “we
might not be able to speak to
him, but we could at least hang
on his coat tails and follow him
to Schul." Then the great mo
ment came: "Deutsch?”
"N e i n.” “Hebraisch?” “Ah,
yes." And we merrily chatted
in Hebrew the rest of the way.
I never felt a deeper sense of
Klal Yisraet (the university of
the Jewish people) than on
this occasion, and other similar
ones in France. Switzerland,
and Italy the year before on the
way to Israel.
As we approached the Great
Synagogue, on Krystalgade,
Mr. Cohen the butcher includ
ed in his remarks a capsule
history of the synagogue, high
lighted by the interesting fact
(hat former King Christian X
had taken part with the Jew
ish community in the centen
nial celebration of the cyna-
gogue’s building in 1933. This
was the brave King who, ten
years later, led his country in
wearing the Star of David
when the Nazi invaders forced
the members of the Jewish
community to mark them
selves such.
The synagogue was beauti
fully laid out. having been
completely restored in 1961
thanks to the Conference of
Material Claims Against Ger
many.
Mr. Levitan had prepared a
marvelous little pamphlet on
the Jewish Community in Den
mark, a model of what all Jew
ish communities should have
for foreign visitors. Four short,
information-packed pages in
form the inquiring English-
speaking Jew of a Bird’s
