ing the Council, from which it

The Catholic prelate said he had

Niemoeller Says Protestants
Guilty As Well As Catholics
NEW YORK (JTA)- Protestants
as well as Catholics were guilty of
an un-Christian silence Airing the
Nazi holocaust against the Jews of
Europe, a German Protestant pastor
who spent seven years in a concen
tration camp for defying Hitler, said
this week.
Rev. Martin Niemoeller, one of
six co-presidents of the World
Council of Churches, made the as
sertion in an article in Christianity
and Crisis, the intellectual journal
of file Protestant movement.
Discussing the controversy over
“The Deputy,” the play which ac
cuses the late Pope Pius XII of
failing to speak out against the Nazi
genocide, Rev. Niemoeller asserted
that F*rotestant churches had no
right “to excuse and to acquit them
selves” of the charge made by West
German playwright Rolf Hochhuth in
his play. Leading Catholics have
called the play and its charge un
fair and slanderous.
Rev. Niemoeller declared that all
of Christianity was guilty of having
"refused to follow its master" in
the European situation. He added
that “if Christian churches were to
become aware of self-centeredness
and recognize their fundamental
duty both to identify themselves
with and to love all fellow-beings
for whom their Lord and Savior
died, then the wide attention given
to ‘The Deputy’ would have borne
ample and blessed fruit.”
