luncheon press conference with
members of the Yiddish, English-
Jewish and Israeli press at the
Stephen Wise Congress House here,
Dr. Prinz indicated that the religi
ous aspect of the Dialogue would be
an explosive one.
‘‘When we talk of religion,” Dr.
Prinz said, “we mean both the re
ligious temper and the personal re
ligiosity of people We also mean
the function of organized religion in
the society in which we live.”
While Dr. Prinz announced that
Moshe Sherett, former Prime Min
ister of Israel, would be one of the
Israeli members of the panel, he did
not name any others from the Is
raeli side. The American panel, to
be headed by Dr. Prinz, include
Rabbi Emanuel Rackman of Yeshiva
University; Gershon Cohen of Co
lumbia University; Prof Edmond
Cahn, New York University Law
School; Nathan Glazer, University of
California; Shad Polier; Mrs. Mar
tin Steinberg, and Howard M.
Squadron.
The four-day conclave, designated
“The Issues That Unite Us," will be
held in Jerusalem August 10 and 11
and in Haifa on August 12 and 13.
It will be the third successive year
in which American Jewish commun
ity leaders, writers and artists meet
with their Israeli counterparts. The
Dialogue will seek to explore those
areas of Jewish life that link Amer
ican Jewry with the people of Is
rael.
The dialogue on Religion will in
clude such questions as the follow
ing:
"How deeply religious is the Amer
ican Jew? The Israeli Jew?”
"To what extent is his personal
religiosity translated into the values
of synagogue and home 0 ”
"What recognition does religion
enjoy in public life?”

‘‘To what event does it or does it
not penetrate politics, education and
other forms of public life?”
“Does religion have a bearing
upon the social problems of society
— injustice poverty, disease, in
equality? What should religion do
about them?”
Under the heading of Culture, Dr.
Prinz said question to be discussed
include:
“Is there a Jewish culture in the
Diaspora? In Israel? If there is a
Jewish culture in the Diaspora, will
it continue to exist?”
"What are the Jewish specifics in
the area of Jewish creativity —
writing, painting, music?”
Among the questions to be discuss
ed under the heading of history, Dr.
Prinz listed the following:
“How is today’s Jew part of the
3,500-year history of the Jewish peo
ple? To what extent does he con
sider himself the preserver of a
historic continuity'’”
“What kind of history of Jewish
suffering and survival should be
taught to Israeli children? To Jew
ish children in America?
“What is a valid attitude of the
citizen of Israel to Zionism and the
Zionist movement'’”
One of the questions the Dialogue
will take up on the issue of Democ
racy is “To what extent does de
mocracy in America threaten the
assimilation and disintegration of
the Jewish community?”
Dr. Prinz referred to the religious
aspect of the Dialogue as possibly
becoming explosive because of the
important role Orthodoxy plays in
the governmental structure of Is
rael — a situation which has been
strongly criticized by Reform and
Conservative rabbis in the United
States. The U. S. panelist, cm Re
ligion is Rabbi Rackman, an Orth
