Sadness befell SF Club this past
week as three of its members pass
ed away and were laid to rest in
local and New York cemeteries.
Joseph Cieman, the oldest member
of the club, 94 years of age, died
March 21, at his home, after having
been discharged from the hospital,
where he had undergone two serious
operations. He was bom in Russia
and lived here over 40 years, coming
from Toronto. Canda. He was a char
ter member of Temple Beth El, a
member of Congregation B’nai Is
rael, B’nai B’rith and the Jewish
Community Council. He is survived
by two sons; a daughter, three
grandchildren and two great-grand
sons. Funeral services were read
by both David Susskind and Rabbi
Morris Chapman The remains were
interred in Royal Palm Cemetery.
Ida Bernstein, 74, died March 21
after a few days illness. She was
bom in Lithuania and was here only
three months from Brooklyn, N. Y.
She is survived by three daughters,
a son, a brother and three sisters.
She had seven grandchildren and
two great grandchildren The re
mains were shipped to New York
for burial.
Frieda Ehrlich 74, died March 24.
She was bom in Poland and came
here three years ago from New
Rochelle, N. Y. She was a member
of Congregation B’nai Israel. She
is survived by a son and daughter
and six grandchildren. Funeral serv
ices were conducted by Rabbi Mor
ris B. Chapman and the remains
were laid to rest in Royal Palm
Cemetery.
Arthur and Ida Gahn have re
turned to Philadelphia for the. sum
mer months, promising to return to
their home in the Sunshine City later
in the year.
Dr Ned Tirk and Henriette Tirk
have been busy these past two
weeks getting the new home they
purchased at 2243 West Vina Del
Mar in shape, and soon the front
doors will be opened as they play
host to hundreds of their friends.
They were presented with a new
outdoor grill and this writer can
smell the hamburgers and weinies
as “Doc” plays host to the “gang.”
Henriette Tirk is one of the Finan
cial Secretaries of SF Club and has
been reelected for the year 1964-
1965.
Along sick row brighter news
gleams from the portals of hospi
tals and homes. Bernard Rubin,
who underwent surgery last week
at the Palms of Pasadena Hospital,
is doing splendidly and his wife
Daisy is looking forward to taking
him home before this week ends
Joe Brenner is doing nicely at home
and we look forward to seeing him
at our official opening of the new
dub house
Dr. Samuel Rothman is continu
ing making wonderful progress at
home and is able to visit his many
friends but, takes it easy. Harry
Goldberg will enter Mound Park
Hospital late this week for surgery.
He faces an operation for hernia
Helen Birkhahn took part in a con
cern at the Club meeting last week
and is again back on two feet and
swimming into the center of enter
tainment activities. Harry Bauman
also visited the Club last week and
his fellow members registered their
joy at seeing him. Ida Bush is
doing well at home, getting out once
in a while to attend an important
event at SF Club Israel Cutler feel
ing much better and getting about
as usual. Sol Eisenberg feeling much
better and visiting among his friends.
Hermina Goldstein staying closer to
home these days, and getting along
nicely. Clarice Kraus still at home,
doing splendidly and seeing friends.
Minnie Levy is off to New Jersey
to spend a month with the children
and grandchildren. Oscar Bilfeld has
returned to his home in the Bronx,
N. Y., with the goodbye statement
"See you in November!”
The big auditorium of the new
Jewish Community Center Building
was transformed rapidly last Fri
day as a volunteer work crew, from
the SF Club, consisting of Oscar
Ascher, Nathan Rubin, Manny Ward,
Leon Fatten, Harry Kaplow, David
Fisher and this writer opened crate
after crate of new tables and chairs
and set them up for the opening
“Home Again” gathering, which of
ficially took place on April 2. This
was a donation from SF Club, which
is also furnishing a complete stain
less steel kitchen, including two 500
cups coffee urns. The building is
95% completed and within the next
few weeks all parts of the building
will have been finished. There are
just minor touchup6.
The 1964-1965 officers of the SF
Club will be officially elected into
their positions at the meeting of
Monday, April 6, when.one vote will
be cast by the Recording Secre
tary The selection of the Nom
inating Committee has been ac
cepted by the body unanimously and
there was no opposition slate of of
ficers sid>mitted. The new officers
will be installed on Monday, May 4,
by Mrs. Irving Sohon, Executive
Director of the Jewish Community
Center.

“Good Old Vaudeville Days,” the
annual extravaganza given by SF
Club each year, will be pnemotad
at a matinee on Tuesday, April 28,
with curtain time at 1:30 p. m.
Tickets went on sale March 30, and
the entire community and public is
invited. The tickets are $1 each and
the entire proceeds will be used tor
important equipment for the new
Jewish Community Center Building.
