Rabbi Epstein
To Attend Parley
Of Rabbis
Rabbi Harry H. Epstein, spiritual
leader of Congregation Ahavath
Achim, will join 400 of his colleagues
at the 64th annual convention of the
Rabbinical Assembly. The conven
tion, which will take place at Gros-
singers, New York, from April 19
through April 23, will have as its
theme “The Quest for Jewish Unity
— Inner Tensions and Outward
Reach.”
The Convention program includes
two sessions on the main theme-
one addressed by Rabbi Simon
Greenberg, vice chancellor of the
Jewish Theological Seminary of
America, and a second addressed by
Rabbi Max J. Routteoberg, spiritual
leader of Temple Bnai Shoiom, Rock
ville Centre, N. Y. Rabbi Theodore
Friedman, president of the interna
tional rabbinic association and spir
itual leader of Congregation Beth
13, South Orange, N. J., and Rabbi
Wolfe Kelman, executive vice presi
dent of the assembly will also al
lude to the quest for Jewish unity
in their reports on the activities of
the past year. Other sessions will
deal with the problems of intermar
riage, with new approaches to the
teaching of Bible and Talmud, and
a report by two members, recently
returned, on the impact of the Con
servative Movement in Israel.
“The tensions within the American
Jewish community sap energies
which should be devoted to the solu
tion of vital problems affecting all
of us," said Rabbi Epstein. “While
groups of Jews quarrel with each
other, file number of intermarriages
among our young people is multiply
ing; the divorce rate among Jews is
dimbing to unprecedented heights;
Jewish ‘illiteracy’ is assuming
scandalous dimensions.”
“On another level,” Rabbi Epstein
continued, "we find it difficult to
give our full support to various
movements for better intergroup
understanding, because of conflict
within the Jewish community on
who is qualified to speak for us. It
is my hope,’’ he conducted, “that
the deliberations of the coming Rab
binical Assembly convention will go
far toward resolving some of these
conflicts.”
