Bowling Bits

AJCC Mens’ League
OtltoarOy, you’d think that three
guy* bowling over 000 aeries in one
league at the sente nite was pretty
■big news, but
lalong comes
I another outatand-
ling feat that puts
I the former item
I in the shade, and
laltho it would be
I quite a scoop for
■ most writers, to
I me it's going to
be rather hard to
I write about. You
sea, it ooncerns a fellow I’d become
rather load of, not only because this

chap made me look like an over
weight giant when I stood next to
him, but also because he could take
a joke like a real sport, aitho hia
wife would call me the next day
and threaten suit. I’m referring to
Subway Silverman, who rejoined the
league only two weeks ago, which
gave me a trig thrill ’cauae he’s
such good material to write about,
but alas, be only lasted a couple of
weeks and now is gone once again,
thanks to a really amazing act of
fate—it seems that Subway was
doing fine in his first game and
was working on a double, but the
poor guy reached over a bit too far
and got just a little too close to the
air Mower, and before anyone could
grab him he was zooming thru the
celling and on into space, and the
last he was beard from was in oiirit
over Australia—if only he could
have gotten hold of his ball, the
whole thing would never have hap
pened—anway, good sailing, Subway,
wherever you are . . .
Now as for the big series, another
bowler just about the same weight
as Subway, but who is smart enough
to wear lead weights in his shoes,

Jerry EHiaoo, put an a fine exhibi
tion with a hot 220-628 pinburnet . .
. Only three pins back was Hy
Ruben with a very by 223425 set .
. . And third was Jan (Schoolboy)
Karp, who must have been studying
very bard lately according to the
slump he’s been in, but who re
laxed during spring vacation by
pounding out a Sharpe 216-611 mas
terpiece . . . Other high sets were a
202-576 by what’s left of Stan Silver-
man (the guy's loet 20 pounds al
ready and he’s only cut out four
meals a day), and the other big
set was a 223-573 by Bob Silverman,
who is keeping the family name in
print now that his pappy Subway is
up there probably selling whiskey to
Moon Maid’s kin folios . . . Couple
of nice singles, a 217 by trap artist
Hank dayman—and a 207 framed
by ace cameraman Abe (Hot Lens)
Levinson . . . Headpin Phil Fried
man asked me to make this an
nouncement for him—Express Lanes
will be philled up due to the State
Tournament being held there start
ing in April, except Saturday and
Soiday nites after 8 PM, at which
time there will be room for open
bowling and jackpot games—(Hank
dayman, please notice). One other
item of importance—Camp Barney
Medintz, the Garden of Yidden, is
almost filled up (no, Mama, not the
lake, honey—the cabins) and by the
time this issue hits the streets I
think we may all congratulate the
staff and committee at the AJCC on
a job well done! How about that!

Mr. and Mrs. Club
Man, this column is sure enough
full of news about the little men
this week — sweet brother Lewis
Silverboard, still shivering from his
experience of hanging around in a
meat cooler (but not by choice-
meats, that is), finally shook off the
chills by setting fire to the woods
for a Mazing 219 singleton and 571
series (so I cheated 60 pins on totals,
he’s my only brother, ain’t he?),
which goes to show that foot tor foot
he’s the greatest! Step it, Yukie X!
. . . The Toy Bulldog, Irv Appelson,
who’s getting a bit impatient sitting
around for his daughter to make
her debut into the world, whiled
away a couple of hours, plus a 213
and 578 pins to capture top honors
as high man for the nite—how he
does it with that approach is beyond
me—he approaches the line as if
HE were the one who is expecting
. . . And while mi the subject of odd
bowling styles, Jerry Lebowitz, the
Wizard of the Oddest, crane up with
a mystifying 203 single . . . Ken
Welson kendled the pins for one high
smoker, a 209 sparker ... As for
the girls, except for pretty Pat
Cohen’s 188 single and charming
Beatty Wolbe’s newsbits, they should
have all stayed home and washed
their hair . . . Hope you weren’t one
of the four people who missed the
Mr. and Mrs. great show. Grey
Flannel Tallis, for which I’d like
to congratulate the entire crew—it
was worth every effort they put into
it, and thanks to you Ml for some
wonderful entertainment, and also
to you in the audience for buying
tickets and hellring the work in
Youth Activities at the Synagogue .
. . Offers are still pouring in to
most of the stars to appear on
Broadway, except for head usher
leky Orenstein, who was asked to
appear on the Expressway (no car,
please) by all the five foot sixers
and under—as for myself, I had a
terrific view of Estelle Carl’s spinal
column, which really was very in
teresting, after all . . . Icky may be
seen all next week at the Central
Theater—he’s working the left side.
That’s the tenth frame—see you in
the alleys next week! (If Icky ain’t
ushering).
