Judge, Superior Court
Fulton Judicial Circuit
Hie gift’s on my desk ... a book
of the Old Testament in English.
And the giver ... he doesn’t sign
his name . . . writes: “This book
is for your Jewish cohimn. Our
Bible gets so little notice in the
press . . . Jewish or otherwise . . .
and my idea is to inspire you to
write at least one column about it
It should help make your column
worthwhile. So please spread our
Holy Scripture around somewhat.”
And I thank him for the book,
though I have three copies of the
Old Testament on my book shelves
at borne. “Yes,” the giver of this
book is saying, “really how much
of our Scripture is quoted by writ
ers in the Jewish press They write
mostly about Jewish problems . . .
what to do about anti-Semites and
other problems of that sort But,
Segal, our main problem hasn’t to
do with our enemies, but much
rather how to live up to our teach
ings in our Testament.
“So, my dear sir. I’m sending
you this book of our Old Testa
ment in the hope that your column
will notice it and spread its mean
ing around among those who read
you. Yes, sir, our Bible needs to
be spread widely . . . among non-
Jews as well as among us Jews,
to teach ’em all what being of God
is all about.
“So, Segal, you can make at
least one of your columns a teach
ing all about the Old Testament . . .
what’s in it, especially in the book
of Psalms and the book of our
Proverbs. You can make your
column useful thus at least on one
occasion. (Though, realy, I’m kid
ding.) There’s in fact, quite a lot
of sense in your columns most of
the time. So please, get busy, Segal,
in a column all about the goodness
of our (Md Testament. In case you
may have forgotten, your column
can find highness for itself in the
Book of Psalms and the Book of
Proverbs. Please get busy, sif."
Oh, yes, I thank this man. Just
before receiving his letter my poor
head had been feeling troubled
about this column; What to write
about, after the more than 30 years
during which I’ve been doing this
column. It’s about time I was writ
ing something bright and new . . .
and what’s brighter and newer
than our Old Testament. It's so
bright and new because it hasn’t
been in the lives of so many of
us. (We’re reading the latest novels,
rather, and really which of the
novels will keep living as long as
Our Testament?)
So I go to the Book of P slams
which is telling me;
’Tremble and sin not. Commune
with your own heart Offer your
sacrifices of righteousness and put
your trust in the Lord.”
Oh, yes, my sins! The other day
I pushed away from my desk in
the daily newspaper office where
I work, a man who had been tell
ing me how old he was in a world
that doesn't care much for guys
who have come to age 70, or even
for those who have come to age
90, and can’t find jobs by which to
keep an living.
This visitor at my desk was 70
and he was hoping that maybe I
could help him find a job some
where, but all I knew to say to
him was, “Sir, there isn’t a thing
1 can do for you in a world which
doesn’t care for men wbo’re no
older than 40."
So I could feel myself to be a
sinner in the world in which the
Book of Psalms is telling me:
“The Lord also will be a high
tower for the oppressed ... a
hightower in time of trouble; for
Thou, O Lord, hast not forsaken
them that seek Thee.”
Yes, I was feeling unworthy as
one of the human family which
doesn’t care much about this guy
of 70, and what could I do for him?
But out of the Book of Psalms I
could speak hopefully to God: “The
Lord al9o will be a high tower for
the oppressed, a high tower in
time of trouble . . . For Thou, O
Lord, hast not forsaken them that
seek Thee.”
Sure enough, dear sir . . . I'm
speaking to the reader who wrote
me toward improving this column
. . . there’s so much in Scripture
for me . . . and others of us . . .
to know more of. Yes, and now I’m
turning to our Book of Poverbs
which is speaking to me:
“Wisdom is uttering her voice:
‘How long, ye thoughtless, will ye
tove thoughtlessness? How long
will fools hate knowledge.” And
the Book of Proverbs Is telling my
poor head much more: “Thou
mayest walk in the way of good
men, and keep the paths of the
righteous ... My son, forget not
My teaching, but let Thy heart
keep My commandments, for
length of days and years of life,
and peace will they add to thee.
Let not kindness and truth forsake
thee; bind them about thy neck.
Write them upon the table of thy
hearts. So shalt thou find grace
and good favor in the sight of God
and man . . .
Oh, yes, I thank that correspond
ent of mine not only for the Old
Testament he sent me, but even
more for all the goodness my poor,
forgetful head has been finding in
the Good Book. Most of us have
the Good Book on our shelves but
how many of us are reading it?
I find this in the Book of Proverbs
and it's not only for me alone but
for us all. It is saying: "Withhold
no good from him to whom it is
due, when it is in the power of
thy hand to do it.”
And so, thanks, thanks again,
dear correspondent.
