Bowling Bits
by EDDIE SILVERBOARD
ACCC Mens’ League
Man, you think you got troubles—
you should try writing a colimn
like this some time where the guy
you have to brag on as the best
bowler of the week happens to be
a dose competitor of yours in bus
ness I've racked my brains trying to
get oik of it, but there just ain't no
way With 90 men competing
every week, this one insurance
agent has to come up and beat all
of them—the odds of his doing this
would be about 500 to 1, according
to Lloyds of London (and this par
ticular bowler’s agency probably
would go higher, since they’ve seen

him bowl) — anyway let’s get k
over with . . .
Top bowler of the week honors
was grabbed by Milt (the book
maker) Pergament, well known
policy writer in the under (writing)
world, who picked up a nice
dividend with a 203-590, converting
every spare as if they were term
policies (and milt, don’t be angry
about not capitalizing your name—
that was Mama’s idea, and aKho
she's the greatest, she can some
times make Leo Durocher seem
like the best loser In the world) . .
And speaking of my Mama, here's
wishing all of you moms and grand-
moms and moms-in-law a very
happy Mother’s Day with a re
minder to all you lucky sons and
daughters that it wouldn’t hurt to
try to make Mother’s Day a 365
day happening every year . . .
Now here's something that won't
happen every year — second high
bowler was Howard Adler, the
leagues’ man of the cloth (no, no—
he’s not a minister—what I mean is
he sells material) and Howie bolted
to a silly 223-682 count . . . You
know, this is quite a coincidence—
we have two S. Silvemans in the
league, and one is the heaviest (aw
come one, Eddie, quit being so
nice, it ain’t like you) alright, so
one is the fattest and the other is
the skinniest in the league—the one
with all the skin, Stanley, popped
another big one, this time a whop
ping 212-684 set, and the one with
all the bones, Subway, did all he
could to keep his team in first
place except cheat, which he should
have . . .
There is now one half a point
difference between first and second
place, with one week to go, so looks
like another down to the wire fin
ish this year—and for high aver
age, this will be settled also the
last nite of bowling between num
bers Aroran and Small Paul Sifen—
stick around for an on the spot
coverage of that one ... In the
singles division, most outstanding
was the game thrown by Sol (Boss
Crump) Benamy, who had four
strikes in a row the second time
in his Kfe (the first time was with
a box of wet matches) and winded
up with one of his all time highs,
a fine 171 total, and I hope when
I’m his age I can be as young at
heart as he is . . . Eddie Recht-
man, the capmaker, started off the
nite with two had fits, but found
the right size and set his cap for
a 205 single . . . Sid Leventhal
leavened a few pins his first game
with a 224 . . I’m not going to
mention his name, but one of the
guys in the league who has a sports
wear shop at Broadview that is
now being enlarged and remodeled
(he ought to do that to his bowl
ing too) styled a fancy 84 game,
and to be sine the right one gets

the credit, I’m not referring to his
brother Bob. (Now that ain’t crick
et, Eddie!) . . . Almost overlooked
this one—Fred Benamy, the form
er heavyweight, unloaded a stout
213-582 series, which is about all I
can take since I didn’t do too good,
so let’s go see what happened in
the
Mr. and Mrs. League
If I hadn’t been there Td never
have believed it, but there it was
right up on the telescope—Harriet
Mills—177. This just about equals
the Cassius Clay upset, except
that NOBODY would have bet it
would have happened—pretty game,
pretty one! . . Big game for the
men was Don Diamond’s sparkler,
a dazzling 245-582 set . . . Leading
lady for the nite was Charlotte
Rosenberg with a 197-479 thing . .
Bit parts that got a nice hand were
Grace Baumrind with a 171 and
Diane Silverboard in one of her
rare appearances in the spotlite
(quit splashing my clothes, honey!)
with a sharp 180 . . .
Jerry Lebowitz, who picked out
the girl sponsored by Butler’s who
won the Miss Atlanta contest (and
I hope his wife reads this) came
up with a single almost as pretty
—a 228 . . . Now for the long and
the short of it—Frank Alexander,
the contortionist turned bowler,
danced and twisted to a jumping
210 single, and George Singer, who
is almost as tall as Frank (if you
measure him from belt loop to belt
loop) slimmed down his average
with an unappetizing 93 cknker . . .
Just a word now from Kenny—
dere mudders and fodders, they
ain’t much more room left at Zaban
Park for yur brats, so if you want
a peaceful summer you better hur
ry and sine up your youngus for
AJEOOMCE—just call the Center
and tell Frandne (if you can wake
her up) to send you an appleka-
shun—you won’t regrett it—I KNOW!
