Naming Ceremony
A religious naming ceremony for
the newborn baby daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. David Benchimol was
conducted at Sabbath services on
May 1-tad. Grandparents are Mr.

celebrated at Beth land's Sunday
School with songs, play and recita
tions. Rabbi Mallinger presented a
Lag Bcmer sermon at the Sabbath

monthly meeting last week. Mrs.

The annual Sisterhood Sabbath
Service and tribute win take place
Friday, May 8, at Temple Beth-El.

Mrs. David Weilens, president of
the Temple Sisterhood, and her hus
band will perform the honor of

“I wx never so thndied in my
life!” Thus spoke Mrs. Marion Roes,
president of the Jewish Commun
ity Council, when the curtain went
down on the first half of “Good Old
Vaudeville Days,” which was pre
sented in the Jewish Community
Center Auditorium on Tuesday aft
ernoon, April 28, before an audience
numbering 300.
The show was led by Doris Bern
stein, a St. Petersburg girl and as
recent finalist in the Metropolitan
Opera National Auditions, who
stopped the show “dead” in its
tracks, with the audience giving her
a standirg ovation, and compelling
her to offer two encores before they
would allow her to depart.
The vaudeville show was a
spariding presentation, composed of
members of toe entertaining staff
of SF dub and professional friends.
It opened with Harry Rose paying
tribute to A1 Jolson and offering
two of Jolson’s top song hits, fol
lowed by Dorothy Marks, a beau
tiful Hawaiian dancer, who was
wonderfully received. Frances Mon
roe, a professional guest, was in
perfect voice and toe audience ap
plauded her continuously.
Ait Httlfor, 84 year old wooden
shoe tap dancer, again proved the
favorite he is with his audiences.
Doris Bernstein appeared in this
spot, and speaking in theatre par
lance, "Wowed them.” Betty Miller,
portraying Ethel Merman, sang
"You Can’t Get A Man With a
Gun” and "Diamonds Are A Girl’s
Beet Friend.” She was in wonder
ful voice, did a job that was out
of this world and proved herself
a genuine trouper. Jessie Parks and
her Banjoliers, closing the first half
of the program with their string
syncopation and Jessie’s great voice,
took the audience by storm and
closed the first half of the program
to tumultuous applause.
In the second half of the program
Helen Birkhabn rendered a violin
concert, assisted at the piano by
Ada Marx, and started things off
with applause ringing all around
them. Oscar Ascher in two comedy
song manbera proved most capable
and very enjoyable. Florence Harris
added her melodious voice to the
quick moving vaudeville program
and still remains one of SF Chto’s
favorites.
Manny Ward with two comedy
singing numbers was a “wow." He
opened with wedding gown, veil and
trimmingi singing “Thera Was I
Watting At The Church,” and wound
up with a change of costume of a
ttttie girl singing “Why Do They
Always Pick On Me.’’ Needkss to
say the audience loved every bit of
his comedy gestures and movements.
Jeatie Parks sang one manhcr to
this spot, but a very appropriate
one, “Bless This House” and the
audience rose to the occasion and
Bell Mazear (Mrs. Samuel Mazear)
will be leaving shortly for New York
City to attend the wedding of her
granddaughter, Marcia Gromet, to
Elliot Kaplan which will be held on
May 30 in Rockville Center, Long
Island. "Hie young couple will honey
moon at Miami Beach, and grancbna
will return to St. Petersburg to
cook for her Samuel. After the hon
eymoon the couple will make their
permanent home in Miami Beach.
Rebecca Eisenberg is bock home
from Mound Park Hospital and
happy. Harry and Jennie Goldberg
are both back home after hospital
and rest home experiences and both
are doing well. Julius Maza is
smiling and happy after undergoing
surgery at St. Anthony’s Hospital
and Edith is happy to have her
old boy beck home. Joseph Brenner
attended “Good Okie Vaudeville
Days” and is coming along slowly
but surely and should be his oki
self soon. Ida Busfo also attended
the performance and enjoyed her
self through two hours of entertain
ment.
Ira and Alta Ctitier plan to leave
shortly for their home in Old Town,
Maine, returning to St. Petersburg
again next October.
George Pollock played host to the
entire cast of “Good Old Vaudeville
Days” at a dinner given on Monday
evening at the Gold Room of toe
Driftwood Restaurant. Thirty-eight
members of the caat, their wives
and husbands, and tee entire orch
estra, were an the invite list. The
orchestra brought along its instru
ments and another peat evening
went into the history books of toe
SF Club.
Event Will Honor Community's
Civic Leader Sam Mendelson
thunderous applause followed. The
Mystifying Mr. X, a magician from
way back in the Gay 90’s, making
his first appearance in 68 years,
proved as mystifying as he was
introduced to be. His tricks were ex
ceptional aid he proved a magician
of note. He also proved to be Sol
Eisenberg, an 83 year old member
of the dub.
The audience participated in the
singing of “Because of You,” with
the orchestra consisting of Barney
Socol on harmonica; Ada Marx,
mraical director, at the piano; Helen
Birkhahn, Jessie Parks and Harry
Rose on violins; Manny Ward with
accordion; Ann Cohen, drums, and
the Banjoliers
Tie entire proceeds from the
show will be used to purchase an
electric refrigerator for the kitchen,
which will complete the entire kitch
en Senior Friendship Club furnished
for use of all organizations meeting
and using the Center.

Tiis dinner marks one of the
great events in the history of the
State of Israel Bond campaigns in
the State of Florida.
Sam Fried land, president of Food
Fair Stores, extends his personal
congratulations to Sam Mendelson
for being honored by the “State of
Israel with the Medallion of Honor.
Mr. Friedland was first to receive
this Award from the State of Israel
and it is a rare distinction for Sam
Mendelson to be the next recipient.
Dr. Aaron Kahcn, executive di
rector of Greater Miami Israel
Bonds, will be conducting the Men
orah Lighting Ceremony when eigh
teen citizens from Tallahassee will
be selected to kindle each of the
sixteen candles to commemorate
Israel’s 16th year of statehood. A
leading citizen will be selected to
bear the Torch of Zion and another
to have the honor of holding the
Pilot Light.
Senator Wayne Mane of Oregon
will present the Mendallion of Hon
