AJCC Mens’ League
In a race that went right down
bo the wire, one name stands out
that will be tafeed about from now
until every pin in the country is re
duced to toothpicks, as a hero
was born last week in the final rule
of bowling—Sol Benamy, smallest
in the league and largest in the
heart, actually carried his team to
the top of the heap in one of the
most outstanding performances ever
seen in bowling competition. This

three splits, including the 5-7 twice
and the 3-7 once (which is just
about his height) to bowl 50 pins
over hie bead in the last and crucial
game of the season and pounded
out a 182, just enougi to eke out
the team that had held first place
for 28 weeks and send them away
from the alleys looking for the near
est gas pipe . . .
Sol’s Pros, the champs of this
season, includes such well known
characters as the Candy Man, Dick
Bom; Jack the Yipper Taffel; Abe
(Hot Lens) Levinson; Gibby Cohen,
the Seeing Eye Man; and Harold
Maisei, the pantsmaker, whose 203-
561 set the pace for his team to
take home the big payoff . . .
Meanw bile, Harry Gershon’s
Hawks, now known as Gershon’s
Gassers, who had held the first place
spot ail year, took on more gas
than was used here when the wea
ther stayed below zero for two
weeks straight back in 1962, led by
Bobby Silverman with an ardorless
127 and Lionel Joffre with a flaming
129—suffice it to say that only ooe
man on the team rolled over 500,
and that by a mere 2 pins, this
doubtful honor going to Sid (Sub-
weight) Silverman, who by the way
traded bis chhaiiiua in for a St.
Bernard ... As for high series, only
a couple of big ones here—
Dove Hochbaum led the pack with
a sweeping 234-594 set, and Numbers
Aronin finished the season (and Paul
Sifen) with a 589 to take the High
Average Trophy one step ahead of
the Little General with a 186 for the
year . . .
Quite a few big singles, but nothing
to get excited about, so we’U slide
by that to congratulate my sweet
little Mama on the engagement of
one of her grandsons, Stanley, who
was bowled over by a pretty little
headpin by the name of Heiaine
Berger, and who couldn’t have pick
ed a better pa-in-law than my bro
ther Yuhie if she'd looked in every
cooler in the world . . . Best of luck
to the both of you! . . . Next week
will give you a run-down on the
AJCC Roll-Off, and the following
week a listing of the trophy winners
and how kicky they were.

Mr. and Mrs. League
Before going into the alleys for
this league’s scores, let me just take
a few lines to congratulate Ralph
and Phyllis Saul for ooe of the finest
jobs ever in their presidency of the
Mr. and Mrs. Club, and I’m sure
I speak for ail the members of the
Ahavath Achkn in thanking them
tor their time and efforts in the
past year . . .
As for bowling, another standout
game earned a trophy on the last
nite of regular league pin-knocking
as Irv Appelson, the Toy Bulldog,
turned up the batteries, found his
tooting, and blasted out a 256 single
to win second place high game
trophy—after which his next two
games were so bad that he couldn't
even remember which foot he start
ed on, and I could swear that he
took two steps with his left foot

before he started his approach,
which no doitot threw him off his
game quite a bit . . .
Sheila Cohen led the girls with
one of her better efforts, a bag 182-
506 set, to put her team in conten
tion for next week’s playoffs, which
wiU decide who gets the marble*
in this league, so be sure to watch
for details of this match in next
week’s issue ... In other singles,
Glorida Berke bumped off a 182,
has-been Hank dayman went out in
a blaze of glory with a 212-577 series,
Bill Segal billed himself a 210, and
Norma Schiff schiffted over a board
or two and had one of her abNormal
ones, this time a 171 game . . .
You may get a chuckle out of this
true story, unless the sitoject hap
pens to be you, which R ain’t: A cer
tain sportswriter turned underwriter
tried to get a prospect, who had
undergone a serious operation last
year, insured for some mnrtgtge
coverage, but received a note from
the home office that he would have
to wart three years before the com
pany could consider the case, to
which this agent couldn't resist ans- 1
wering: ‘‘What do you mean three
years! The guy will probably be
dead by then!” . . . Oh, well, you
can’t win ’em all.
That’s the tenth—see you in the
alleys next week.
