UNITED NATIONS (WUP>- Nik
ita Khrushchev's Egyptian visit
should give Washington something
to think about. Certainty the pur
pose of his "friendly” visit with
Nasser is not to give the Cairo dic
tator — who employs Soviet-hated
Nazi scientists and who has a strong
link with Bonn—more power in the
Arab world Nor is the shrewd So
viet leader interested so much in
Nasser’s anti-Israel policy, for the
Hussions are fully aiware of Israel's
progressive life and great accotn-
pbshments in every field of en
deavor.
Khrushchev’s main purpose in
visiting the United Arab Repidriic at
this time is clear. It is to seek ways
and means via Nasser and the Arabs
to oust Britain from the oil-rich
Near Eastern area and to rid it
of the last vestiga of Western in
fluences so that the Soviet Union
might step in and take over. In
order to attain this goal, "expedien
cy” demands that Khrushchev sup
port Nasser in Yemen, in Aden
against the United Kingdom and in
Israel on the Jordan River project,
refugees and UN resolutions long
ago outmoded However, there is
one point that the Khrushchev “co
existence” advocate does not go
along with the arch-enemy of the
Jewish 9tate—the destruction of Is
rael. This has been the one great
disappointment Nasser has met up
with during Nikita’s current visit,
according to infonnation received
here at the UN.
But the situation is bad enough
and poses a serious threat to Israel
and the West, for Khrushchev has
promised Nasser everything he has
requested save a military onslau&it
on Israel with the view to her des-

tructkm. This Mr K has warned
Nasser against
The Soviet leader is more inter
ested in ridding the Near East of
Western influence so that he may
have access to the rich oil-fields in
that strategic area.
The United States, which has a
great interest in the Middle East,
has to date not yet been able to
formulate a definitive policy relative
to that area. While Washington pro
fesses support of Israel, it con
tinues to send Nasser huge funds
so that he can pay his Nazi scien
tists, keep up his 40,000 troops m
Yemen against Britain and
strengthen his propaganda machine
against Israel.
The U. S. State Department seems
to be walking in a blind alley, or
more correctly, on a Mideast tight
rope. The late Dulles’ legacy, pol
itical blunder in foreign affairs, still
holds sway in the State Department
and one wonders when President
Johnson will play a “Truman” and
begin to take matters in his own
hands.
This writer has written to Presi
dent Johnson suggesting that he
take action, through “quiet diplo
macy," in working out “a regional
entente between Turkey, Iran and
Israel" which could serve "as a
powerful balance in the Middle Eas
tern arms race and even as a de
terrent to any fulfillment of the
known threats of aggression against
Israel.” The writer totd President
Johnson that “the very announce
ment of such an entente would
speedily neutralize the Arab world
insofar as Israel is concerned. Tur
key and Iran, both Moslem states
friendly to Israel, have common
borders with Iraq and Syria.”
The writer further wro*e Johnson
"that once such a Friendship Treaty
or entente has been made public, no
Arab state would be bold enough
to embark upon any move against
Israel. On the contrary, it would
have been a sobering effect igxxi
all the Arab states and possibly
lead to a situation wherein they
would want to translate the Armis
tice Agreements into the long over
due peace treaties.”
Your correspondent reminded the
President of the fact that the "Suez
crisis had taught the U. S. a lesson
We and the UN gave in to Presi
dent Nasser on almost every point.
It was a time when Nasser would
have signed on the clotted line for
a peace treaty. But we missed the
bus We know the results. The doors
were further opened to Soviet pen
etration and not so long after our
Sixth Fleet had to go in and our
Marines landed in Lebanon.” We
are paying a high price for this
today.
Indeed, now is the time for the
United States to formulate a policy
in the Middle East based on justice
of the present reality of the sit
uation.
The Near East Entente mi^it be
expanded into including, in addition
to TUrkey, Israel and Iran, also the
United States and Britain. Such an
entente alone could offset whatever
Messrs Khrushchev and
Nasser may have in that strategic
pari of the world so vital to Wes
tern interests.
But, more important, Israel's life
is at stake!
