Thinking Aloud . . .
There is a built-in, tragic weak
ness about the position of the anti-
Zionist American Council for Juda
ism. Its continued attacks on Zion
ism are based oo the false prem
ise of dual loyalty. Their argu
ment is that dual loyalty contri
butes to the furtherance of anti-
Semitism and thus tends to weak
en the position of American Jewry
in the United States. However, in
its attempt to bolster its stand, the
Council is forced into the position
of charging that the bulk of Ameri
can Jews who are sympathetic to
Israel and Zionism are guilty of
dual loyalty, thus providing the
anti-Semites with useful ammuni
tion.
Never was this more obvious than
in the publicity gambit released at
their recent twenty-first annual
convention. Exultantly, the Council
released a statement from Assist
ant Secretary of State Phillips Tal
bot to the effect that the State De
partment “does not recognize a
legal-political relationship based
upon the religious identification of
American citizens” and that the
State Department “does not recog
nize the ‘Jewish people’ concept as
a concept of international law."
Though the Talbot letter made
the Council leaders Jubilant, it was
an unnecessary statement in that
it was on a question that has
never been raised by any American
Jews, Zionists or non-Zionists. As
Rabbi Max Nussbaum, president of
the Zionist Organization of Ameri
ca said: “The Council has simply
put up a straw man and gotten the
government to pull it down. The
oneness of the Jewish people is not
legal or political but emotional and
spiritual."

In getting a U.S. government
statement on the non-existent dual
loyalty question, the Council has
only drawn attention to a favorite
argument of the anti-Semites. It has
raised questions about American
Jewish loyalty that may in the
future rise to plague all Jews, even
of the Council ilk. By raising the
question of double loyalty the Coun
cil only gave exposure to a poison
ous and untrue concept, thus harm
ing the cause of American Jewry,
the very cause it claims to espouse.
The Council, through the hatred
of its leadership for Israel, plays
into the hands of the anti-Semites.
Israel does not need a defense
against the Council. As a sovereign
state it can take care of itself.
However, American Jewry needs
to be defended against the Council,
even though its membership con
sists of a fanatic minority of a
mere 20,000 Jews out of a U.S.
Jewish population that is estimated
at more than 5,500,000. That is the
tragedy of the existence of the
Council, for American Jewry and
for Judaism.
Keey Your Advice . . .
Conventions of the American
Council for Judaism are always
exercises in Jewish negation, a
game in booting around Jewish
values. This year their game was
quarterbacked by Dr. Robert M.
Maclver, a nineteenth century so
ciologist who would ape Prof Toyn
bee if he possessed the semantics
and the reputation of the British
historian who consigned us to de
mise and fossilization. Dr. Mac
lver, who, our readers will recall,
was once involved in a controver
sial study of the Jewish organiza
tional structure, regaled the Juda-
ists with the thesis that American
Jews alone were to blame for their
continuing alienation from the rest
of American society by their ad
herence to “Jewish distinctiveness,”
such as observance of the Sabbath,
resistance to intermarriage and
maintenance of what be called old
taboos.
What the head of the New School
for Social Research has in effect
said was this: Jews, give up your
values, your religion, your tradi
tions, your identity, your scrolls,
your books and tomes, your dis
tinctiveness, your uniqueness, your
temples and synagogues, your
schools and houses of learning,
your beards and culinary habits,
your lulovim and esrogim, your
goblets and candlesticks, your Sab
baths and your festivities, your
raisins and your almonds, your
tombstones and your memorials,
your incense and esrog boxes, your
gefilite fish and white chaleh, your
tfillim and your talessim, your sons
and your daughters and yourselves
—and all will be well with you, for
then you will be dead and fulfil-
ing the prophecy of those who oog
doomed you to extinction and maa-
aiah will come upon a world with
out Jews and Jewish alienation
will no longer trouble the gentiles
and American society will be free
to meet its destiny unhampered by
Jewish distinctiveness and all will
be well with the Toynbees and the
Maclvers, and the Judaista rHW
too.
Dr. Maclver of course has every
right to preach whatever he pleases,
even so old-fashioned and so un
savory a thesis as a monolithic so
ciety in post mid-century America.
However, when he conusels Jew*
to sacrifice themselves on his al
tar, he deserves being told that
Jews do not need his advice.
