Atlanta Hadassah Members
Visit Jerusalem Med. Center
JERUSALEM, May 24—Mrs. Har
old Karp and Mrs. Saul Hanson o!
Atlanta are at present in Israel as
members of Hadassah’s Spring Tour.
Both belong to the Szold Chapter of
Hadassah in Atlanta.
They visited the Iladassah-Hebrew
University Medical Center here in
Jerusalem.
"I was deeply stirred when I stood
next to the Freedom Bell at Hadas
sah presented in honour of former
President Harry S. Truman," said
Mrs. Karp "This bell, shaped like
our famous Liberty Bell in Indepen
dence Hall, Philadelphia, seems to
me to symbolize the love of freedom
common to the United States and
Israel, amt epitomised in Hadassah.”
Ami Mrs Hanson added:
"Words cannot describe the Ha
dassah Medical Center It is fantas
tic, beautifully equipped and modern
to the last tap. All Hadassah mem
bers should come and see for them
selves. Every minute of the visit
has been a thrill.”
The Hadassah-Hebrew University
Medical Center, built and maintain
ed by Hadassah, the Women's Zion
ist Organization of America, is the-
large-st medical complex in the Mid
dle East and embodies the latest
ideas in the design of hospitals. It
consists of a 585-bed teaching and
research hospital, clinical and re
search laboratories, a nurses’ school
and residence, outpatients’ clinics,
mother-and-child pavilion and syn
agogue. In the synagogue are the
famous Chagall stained glass win
dows.
A Medical School ami a Dental
School are in the process of being
completed as part <if the complex.
The Center will ultimately include
16 buildings, and will comprise a
total area of 700,000 square feet. The
buildings are all arranged around a
radial hospital unit in such a way
as to reduce the amount of walking
to a bare minimum, half that in
volved in most large medical cen
ters. The revolutionary principle of
this radial unit is now being adopted
in the designing of new hospitals

This 1963 photograph of the 50-year-old Atlanta Farband Branch 71 includes long-time
stalwarts in the ranks and leadership of Atlantans in behalf of a Jewish state. Through the
years, this group dedicated their efforts to Zionism, inspiring their children and friends
with zeal and idealism. Theirs was the parent organization which has sired a younger
English-Speaking Branch fill. Both of these were sponsors of the recent city-wide celebra
tion of Israel’s 16th Anniversary. The material below was translated from a Yiddish arti
cle appearing in the group's national publication. The translater is an active member of

Farband’s First 50 Years
By Isaac Kruger
Our Farband Branch 71, the first
in the far South, was organized in
the year 1913.
The organizer and initiator was
Avroiwxm Cenker. He was a person
of intelligence, devotion, tireless
energy, and enthusiasm He was the
driving force and the lively spirit
of all tile Earband activities Ln At
lanta.
Among his first co-workers were
the Kuniansky Brothers, Avrohom
and Sonia Israels, Mr. and Mrs.
Mislow, Shiff, Cline, Dreeker and
Sam Zipperman, wJk> is the only
charter member living and is an
active memtvers at present.
Among the most active workers
who are not among the living any
more and should lx* specially men
tioned in our Secretary for many
years, Yetzahok Sirota. Also, Rose
Cenker and Rose Karlick.
A deep impression for the Jewish
people of Atlanta w'as the first Far
band concert there by Haim Katel-
ansky ami A1 Harris.
In the year 1924, the Atlanta
branch organized the Farband Bor-
uehof Women's Club, under the
leadership of Rose Dechovitz. In
1926, the Branch purchased its owe
home for a Farband Center, which
also has server! for a Folks School
which has just been organized. The
first teacher was Yitzchok Fine
Mrs. Fine was a teacher in the Kin
dergarten. Visitors such as Yeal
Entin and Maise Fiehlichof ami
many others have expressed their
enthusiasm of the fine teaching pro
grams of that school.
To our sorrow, it didn't Last long
It came to a crisis where we had
to give it up and sell the Farband
Center. The teacher, Y. Fine, is
now a professor of History in Bal
timore Jewish College.
Thanks to Chaver Cenker, our
Branch wasn't at all hopeless. He
has carried on to new activities,
especially in the cultural field. We
have arranged to have as lecturers
such personalities as Dr. Sszitlovsky,
Dr. Syrkin, Dr. Koralnik, Chaim
Greenberg, Dr. Pinsky, Dr. Yhudo
Konfman, and Yeal Entin. We have
also supported the Jewish Teachers
Seminar, the Journal Zukunft, the
Yivo, and have aLso helped to eir-
culale Yiddish books.
In the year 1938, our Branch cele
brated its 25th anniversary. On this
occasion, our Branch published a
book, “Selective Writing,” by Mose
Freheuchof. Shortly before, we cel
ebrated the Jubilee of Chaver David
Pinsky.
Our Branch Ivas participated in
all Jewish activities of the city—
U. J A., Israel Bonds, national
fund, and histodrut. Many mem
bers of our Branch have visited Is
rael. The Elkans have settled there
with their children. Also, the chil
dren of Sirotas have settled there.
The officers of our Branch now are
Yitzchok Kruger, president; Nathan
Karlick, secretary; and Max Feld
man, treasurer. Together with Cha
ver a Chava Feldman, they are the
most active workers in their home.
They have many Farband gather
ings. The popular Protocol Secre
tary, Frieda Karlick, is number one
ia all Farband activities. She has
given much of her time and energy
to help organize the new Ben Gurion
Farband Branch 611 which consists
of younger members. Many are the
newcomers in this land.
The new Branch is growing, and
let us hope they will continue the
work which the pioneer organizer of
50 years ago started.
We Salute
Israel's 16th
Anniversary
