NEW YORK (JTA)— Eighty-two
graduates were awarded degrees
liere at the 70th annual commence
ment exercises of the Jewish Theo
logical Seminary of America. Ten
prominent personalities were award
od honorary degrees. Graduates of
the Seminary included 19 rabbis who
received ordination, 24 recipients of
the degree of master of Hebrew lit
erature, two doctorates in Hebrew
literature, one doctor of religious ed
ucation, and 30 graduates of the
Teachers Institute of the Seminary
Recipients of the honorary de

WALTHAM, Mass. <JTA>— Rich
aid Cardinal Cushing, Catholic Arch
bishop of Boston, was awarded an
honorary doctor of humane letters
degree at the annual commencement
exercises of Brandeis University at
which 440 graduates received under
graduate and graduate degrees. Dr,
Abram L. Sachar, president of the
university, conferred the degrees.
Other prominent personalities who
were awarded honorary degrees
were: Major General Yaaoov Dori,
president of the Technion-Israel In
stitute of Technology in Haifa; Lt
Gen. Dudley Heaton, Surgeon Gen
eral of the United States Army;
Clark Kerr, president of the Univer
sity of California; Dr George Pack
er Berry, dean of the faculty of
medicine at Harvard Medical
School; Isaiah i/oo Sharfman, pro
fessor emeritus of economies at the
University of Michigan; author Man
rice Samuel; noted actress Helen
Hayes: August Heckscher. director
of the Twentieth Century Fund; and
James Heston, Pulitzer-prize win
ning journalist
NEW YORK (JTA)— Forty-four
Jewish educators from all parts of
the United States and Canada have
been a warden I principals licenses try
the National Board of License of the
American Association for Jewish Ed
ucation, it was announced here.
The group was the first to fulfill
professional requirements establish
ed last year by the board which
represents recognized Hebrew teach
er colleges, bureaus of Jewish edu
cation and national Jewish educa-

Bartel—Kaplan
Miss Kathleen Bartel, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Abe Bartel and Don
ald Kaplan, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Sam Kaplan of Atlanta, were mar-
ri<d May 24 at the Ohav Shalom Syn
agogue, Cincinnati. Rabbi Bernard
Greenfield officiated.
Kathleen attends the University of
Cincinnati Teacher’s College. The
gix/orn attended Ohio State Univer
sity where he was a member of Zeta
Beta Tau.
Mrs. Leonard Bartel, sister-in-law
of the bride, served as matron-of-
honor. Bridesmaids were Mrs. Carl
Ganz, sister of the groom, Miss Dona
Michaelson, Miss Donna Noiman,
and Muss Gayle Gable. Miss Roch
elle Ganz and Miss Marlene Ganz
were junior bridesmaids and Miss
Sharon Ganz was flower girl. The
groom’s sister, Mrs. Robert Litwin,
kept the bride’s book.
Herb DuOovna acted as best man.
Ushers were Leonard Bartel, bro
ther of the bride; Carl Ganz, the
groom's brother-in-law; Tom Rosen
and Alan Steine. Martin Ganz was
the ringbearer.
Among the Atlantans attending
the wedding were Mr. and Mrs.
Philip Solomon, Mrs. Hattie Wolf,
Mrs. Dora Lipsitis, Mr. and Mrs
William Solomon, Mrs. Rose Steine
and Mrs. FYed Steine.
Other out-of-town guests were Mr.
and Mrs. Abe Saliman of Denver.

ment of their son, Harvey Schwartz,
and Miss Barbara Medwin, daughter

Miss Medwin studied music in
Italy and is completing tier educa
tion at Northwestern University.
Mr. Schwartz attended University of
Illinois and is news editor of WON
TV in Chicago.
