left the city with only an oc
casional card or two written
during the years of their ab
sence. Still, the majority of
them had married local girls,
raised families and were still
around to invite her to attend
their own joyous occasions and
to bake for some of their fest
ive happy events.
During World War II, when
her boys entered the service
and were sent out of town or
to another country outside the
United States, Aunt Rosa
would always be sure to send
them a box of cakes and never
forgot any of them. Many nev
er came back
As the neighborhood chang
ed. it was time for Aunt Rosa
to move also, and her eye was
attracted to a piece of land in
the northeast section that was
slowly becoming the mecca of
community living. It was a joy
ful, and also an unhappy day.
when Aunt Rosa moved, but.
not long afterward, we also
moved to this side of town,
making sure it was within
walking distance of her home.
When I became engaged, it
was taken for granted that my
engagement party would be
held in Aunt Rosa's living
room with champagne flowing
like water and the tables set
for a king with enough food to
feed an army. This was done
as planned, with most of At
lanta’s Jewish community at
tending. The house was beauti
fully clecorated with flowers
of every description and there
was not an empty seat in the
place. The Governor of Geor
gia, Hon. Herman Talmadge.
and his lovely wife, Betty,
were invited to the engage
ment and did attend, bringing
with them a sterling silver
compote dish for the bride-to-
be. My wedding was not held
in her home, as hoped, but the
out-of-town guests stayed
there for the occasion.
When our first child, a dau
ghter, was born, it was under
stood we would make a trip
home so that the family Could
meet her. We never returned
to New York after the first
visit home.
When our second daughter
was born in Atlanta, Aunt Ro
sa and Mother took care of
our eldest child. It was Aunt
Rosa who knew how one need
ed to talk and was always
around to give a moment for
listening, no matter how busy
she was.
It was during this time, that
she became very sick and soon
became bedridden. She would
always welcome visitors, but
eventually failed to recognize
them. No one lived at home
with her except one son. God
was planning to take her from
us, as we knew, and all we
could do until then would be
to pray for her to live a day
longer without suffering too
much. Her oldest son married
during her long sickness, and
she was too ill to attend the
wedding in New York. My
mother took her place at the
ceremony, and Aunt Rosa nev
er knew her new daughter-in-
law. or the grandsons she
would have.
On December 26. 1962, Aunt
Rosa was taken from us, and
the chapel was filled to capa
city with her “boys”, friends
and relatives. There were tears
in the eyes of the Rabbi con
ducting the services as he had
known Aunt Rosa a long time
and had even lived on the
same block.
She had been a “mother" to
hundreds of men and spread
her warmth and love through
out the country, never taking
a penny from those who did
not have it for their meal or
board.
Aunt Rosa is gone from us
now, but as I drive by her
home every day, I am remind
ed of her telling me that we
are all put on this earth to
make something out of our
selves. No one can do this for
us, and we can only hope that
her teachings will live with us
forever. She is one woman
many will never forget but al
ways remember as having had
the privilege and honor to
know her.
