If You Ask Me
by
MRS. RALPH SACKS
Director, Pre-School Department
Question—What facilities are used for the preschooler during
Che summer season?
Answer—The entire Nursery School wing—both indoors and out
doors is used by the children. This includes all the equipment which
is generally used year ’round plus special materials and equipment
to meet the needs of the children. The swimming pool and locker
room as well as the playing field and picnic area are used. Trips to
places of interest to younger children are planned to meet the needs
of the group.
Question—Do these young children learn to swim during the
summer?
Answer—Swimming for these children is planned for a portion
of 3 mornings weekly. “Marty” Hooper, the Center’s Aquatics di
rector, supervises the youngsters swimming program and under her
guidance and direction the teachers work with small groups of chil
dren to help them feel “at home” and at ease in the water and to
progress through a series of skills designed to teach them to swim.
Many of the children develop enough skill to propel themselves
freely a considerable distance.
Question—Why is swimming offered only 3 times weekly?
Answer—We are striving to have a well balanced program
for the children and to have too much of any one activity as
swimming, or trips negates the idea of planning for the best de
velopment of the child as a whole.
Question—Who are the teachers for this coming summer?
Answer—Mrs. Cohen, Mrs. J. Robinson, and Mrs. F. Schwartz,
)f our permanent staff, will be with us this summer. Miss Rosalyn
Krick and Miss Linda Sims who have been with the pre-school de
partment in previous years will be returning this summer. Miss
Linda Feldman, Miss Dorothy Fierman, Miss Arleen Gerson and
Miss Sandra Silverboard who have had experience in the pre-school
department, as well as in other Center camping programs, and Miss
Diane Schwartz has also been appointed to the summer staff. Miss
Hannah Blau will be a counselor’s aide.
Question—What is meant by counselor aide and who may be
an aide?
Answer—The counselor aide program is designed to help the
teen age girl learn the basics of working with younger children
under competent supervision. Girls must have successfully com
pleted 9th grade in order to be eligible to apply as a counselor aide.

YJJ. TOZ, SOA
VISIT NEW STADIUM
YJJ led by Mr. Danny Bloom,
TOZ and SOA led by Mr. Stan
Freeman, attended the new At
lanta Stadium Sunday, April 11.
They saw the Braves whip the
Tigers. YJJ’s were accompanied
by their leader and parents who
were kind enough to furnish
transportation. The tickets were
purchased by funds collected by
the club in their candy sale.
TOZ and SOZ chartered a bus
and arrived at the stadium early
enough to get autographs of the
new “Atlanta” Braves.
All the boys enjoyed being in
the new stadium and cheering
for their (hopefully) hometown
team.
Center Clubs Attend
Officers Training Institute
On Sunday, April 11, over 50
members of Center Clubs at
tended an Officers Training In
stitute at Zaban Park. The mem
bers, leaders and guest speakers
arrived at the park and divided
into discussion groups. Mr. Ed
ward Robbins, Director of Camp
Barney Medintz, conducted a
session for presidents and vice-
presidents. Miss Linda Mansker,
leader of SOT, carried on a ses
sion for secretaries. Miss Bar
bara Stein, Youth Activities Di
rector of the AJCC, met with the
treasurers of each club and Mr.
Morris Kotovsky, Assistant Exe
cutive Director of the AJCC, led
a session for all committee chair
men.
The leaders assisting each of
the speakers were: Mrs. Maxine
Barrocas, DJG; Mr Buddy Res
nick, SOJ; Mr. Lanny Glass,
JAO; Mr. Harley Strickland,
SOS. The second hour was spent
in discussion groups with the
members selecting any group
they wished to participate in.
Refreshments were served and
the club members had an oppor
tunity to visit and explore Zaban
Park, site of the Ajecomce Day
Camp.
The club members felt that the
day was very helpful to them in
carrying out the duties of their
office and it was suggested that
next year the program be ex
panded and that it be held early
in the year.

CENTER REPRESENTED
AT CONFERENCE
Mrs. Reuben Cohen, heed
teacher of the AJCC Nursery
School, participated in the re
cent SACUS Conference in Chat
tanooga. The conference program
related itself primarily to chil
dren’s potentials and the role of
teachers, parents and community
in developing fullest potentials.
Upon her return Mrs. Cohen
said that the Southern Associa
tion for Children Under Six,
that sponsored the conference,
has much to offer educators in
this area since it does concern
itself with the problems and
needs of younger children in 13
Southern States. “It was exciting
and stimulating to be with so
many dedicated people in the
field of early childhood educa
tion,” stated Mrs. Cohen, “the
enthusiasm and the exchange of
ideas and practical suggestions
which the participants generated
and shared will be a continued
inspiration.” Conference papers
will be available in published
form my mid summer.
