Arrival of a symbolic casket
bearing ashes from the crema
toria at Dachau was expected
momentarily in Atlanta this
week for reinterment at the
tombstone-monument to be dedi
cated Sunday in Greenwood
Cemetery.
This latest development ma
terialized through a communi
cation by Mrs. Abe Gastfriend
to relatives in Germany request
ing the dispatch of the ashes to
add special meaning to the
tombstone-monument which has
been erected in memory of the
six million Jewish martyred vic
tims of Nazi persecutions in Eu
rope during World War II.
In commemoration of the
dedication, Sunday has been pro
claimed a “Day of Rememb
rance” by Atlanta Mayor Ivan
Allen Jr. who will himself par
ticipate in the ceremonies.
Dignitaries who will take part
also include Israel General Con
sul Shimon Yallon; Pete Wheeler,
state director, Department of
Veterans Service; Meyer Abgott,
commander, Post 112, Jewish
War Veterans; Max C. Gettinger,
executive director, Atlanta Jew
ish Community Council, rabbis
and cantors of Atlanta, and many
other leaders of the Atlanta Jew
ish community.
The dedication occurs two
decades after the end of World
War II, marking a victory for
the Armed Forces of the United
States and Allies over the
bloody regime of Hitler Ger
many.
The year also marks the twen
tieth anniversary of the libera
tion of remnants of European
Jewry from the tortures and
persecutions in German concen
tration camps, ghettoes, gas

Dr. Sanford S. Atwood, presi
dent of Emory University, will be
the principal speaker at the April
28 meeting of Gate City Lodge of
B’nai B’rith.
His appearance is in honor of
the presentation of Gate City
Lodge’s Distinguished Service

standing dentist, Jewish leader
and an alumnus of Emory Univer
sity.
A distinguished scholar and
scientist, Dr. Atwood took his aca
demic degrees from Wisconsin
University, winning both his
Bachelor and Master of Arts de
grees in 1934 after four years.
He secured his Ph.D. degree in
the field of plant cytology in
1937, joining the newly formed
staff of the U.S. Regional Pas
ture Research Laboratory in
State College, Pennsylvania. This

scientfic journals and books.
In 1944, he joined the faculty
of Cornell University, becoming
head of the department of Plant

Ordained in 1945 at the Jew
ish Theological Seminary of
America, Rabbi Chanover holds
advanced degrees in Jewish
studies and general education.
He held important pulpits in
Philadelphia and Albany, New
York, and authored or co-author
ed 14 books on various religious
and educational subjects.
Rabbi Chanover is a pioneer
in the field of worship litera
ture for young people. Widely
used are his illustrated Prayer-
books for Young Children, his
Book of Prayers for Jr. Congre
gations and hi& Haggadah for
the School.
Rabbi Chanover is the editor
of “Our Teachers,” a publication
devoted to problems of Jewish
teacher welfare and education—
and a former associate editor of
“The Synagogue School,” a
quarterly educational journal of
the United Synagogue of Ameri
ca.
Rabbi Chanover was appointed
to his present position after eight
years of directing the Division of
Personnel Services of the Ameri
can Association for Jewish Edu
cation.
Also included in the agenda for
the annual meeting is the pre
sentation of awards to students
of Atlanta Jewish schools who
won in this year’s National
Bible Contest. Names of the
winners and their categories are
reported elsewhere in this paper.

University in 1963.
In 1953 he was chosen dean of
the Cornell Graduate School, a
position he held until he became

as in many civic movements.
Dr. Blass was selected for the
, B’nai B’rith Lodge’s top award
^ for his “leadership through the
years.”

Congregation, the Atlanta ZOA
District, Gate City Lodge and
the Hebrew Academy. He has
for years been a leader in the
Atlanta Welfare Fund campaigns,
an area of communal service he
has shared with his wife, the
former Shirley Makover.
For the past 32 years he has
been a co-chairman of the Mor
ris Hirsch Clinic and its suc
cessor the Ben Massell Dental
Clinic. He has long been out
standing in the dental profession.
His father-in-law was himself
an earlier winner of Gate City
Lodge’s Distinguished Service
Award.

Pioneer Women Groups to Fete National
President, Observe 40th Anniversary
The Pioneer Women Clubs of
Atlanta will join together to hon
or their national president and
celebrate the 40th anniversary of
the founding of Pioneer Women.
This gala event will be com
memorated by a banquet on May
2 at the Progressive Club at 7
p. m.
Mrs. Fine was a founder of
one of the first New York City
chapters of Pioneer Women, and
has served as National Vice
President, National Secretary,
and as a member of the National
Presidium. At present, she is
serving on the Board of Direc
tors of the National Committee
for Labor Israel, is Honorary
Vice President of Jewish Nation
al Fund, represents the Labor
Zionist movement in the Presi
dents Conference of major Jew
ish Organizations.
Mrs. Fine will speak on “Pio
neer Women: Today and Tomor
row” having obtained first hand
knowledge on her many visits to
Israel. During her trip around the
world, she interested herself in
women’s activities. In Japan she
met with the Jewish Ladies Com
mittee of Tokyo who carry on a
program of work for Israel.
