THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE
Pate nff—

On November 13, 1964 three
Israeli farm settlements were
shelled by Syrian artillery posi
tions across the border. A child
dren’s house was hit (see pic
ture), as were dwelling houses,
livestock, machinery, the region
al dental clinic and other struc
tures. Four LsraelLs were killed
in the attack, ten wounded.

October, too, was the month
in which the new town of Car-
miel came off the drawing board
and began to take physical shape
in the heart of Galilee. Carmiel,
planned for a population of 50,-
000, is to be the urban, indus
trial, and social center of the
surrounding agricultural villages:
a boon and a boost for Arab
farmers living in the area—and
for closer Jewish-Ar^b coopera
tion.

One of Israel’s big cultural
events — the once-in-three-years
International Bible Contest in
Jerusalem—took place at the end
of October, amidst a World
Series-like atmosphere. The hard-
fought, neck and neck competi
tion was won by Graham Mit
chell, a Seventh Day Adventist
from Australia.

Tel Aviv’s new Sheraton Hotel
played host to the 16th Chess
Olympiad in November. The So

300 players from 50 countries
competed. The U.S. placed sixth,
Israel sixteenth, in the final
standings.
