Olympics (Maccabiad) to be held
August 23-31 in Israel. Richard
is one of the nation’s top swim
mers and has just been voted
athlete of the year at Northwes
tern.
Mrs. Louis Zusman of Boston
was a recent visitor of Mr. and
Mrs. Maurice Klein to attend the
confirmation of her granddaugh
ter, Beverly, and the high school
graduation of granddaughter,
Carol.
Stuart M. Scheer, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Isadore Scheer was a
recent Bar Mitzvah at B’nai
B’rith Jacob Synagogue.
Dr. Bernard M. Portman has
been chosen 1965-66 chief of the
Savannah Heart Clinic at Mem
orial Hospital.

Solomon C. Epstein, son of Mrs.
Florette J Epstein of Savannah,
and presently cantor of Congre
gation Emanu-El in Charleston,
received a Bachelor of Sacred
Music degree at graduation ex
ercises of the Jewish Theological
Seminary.

Leavitt served a§ an adviser to
the United States War Refugee

thousands of Jews trapped in
Hitler-held Europe. He was elect
ed executive vice-chairman of
the Joint Distribution Commit
tee in January 1947. In Decem
ber 1949 he was elected to the
Board of Directors of the Pale
stine Economic Corporation.
Mr. Leavitt is a former mem
ber of the Board of the United
States Committee for Regugees.
He was awarded the Honorary
Doctorate of Humane Letters by
the Hebrew Union College-Jew-
ish Institute of Religion in 1957.
In January 1959, he received the
Honorary Fellowship from he
Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
He was also elected a member
of the Board of Governors Of the
Hebrew University in Jerusalem

Martin Buber
NEW YORK (WUP)—A com
munity - wide, commemorative
service honoring the memory
and writings of the late Prof.
Martin Buber, Israeli* philosopher
who died on June 13 at the age
of 87, will be held at the Bro
therhood Synagogue in Green
wich Village here on Friday
evening, June 25. The unique
Synagogue, whose spiritual leader
is Rabbi Irving J. Block, shares
a sanctuary on a permanent basis
with the Village Presbyterian
Church.
Some of America’s outstanding
professors and rabbis, including
Rabbi David Greenberg, spiritual
leader of the "Martin Buber Syn
agogue" of Scarsdale, New York,
will participate in the event.

versary of its founding and the
decade of its unique "Covenant
of Brotherhood” with the Village
Presbyterian Church, the Bro
therhood Synagogue has pioneer

Leavitt was graduated from
Cornell University with a B S.
degree in 1916 and has been in
the field of Jewish social work
since 1923 when he joined the
staff of the self-support depart
ment of the Jewish Social Ser
vice Association, later becoming
supervisor, a post he held until
1929 when he entered the service
of the JDC.
