efforts were mobilized to bring
the D P’s to Israel and to save
the Jews from North Africa
and other Arab lands.
The victory of the Jews of
Palestine in their war of libera
tion is one of the miracles of
our age.
The record of American
Jewry in its generosity of ma
terial help and personal service
in the upbuilding of Palestine
and in the development of
Israel is a saga worthy to be
told and retold in the annals
of our history as a people. To
this story Southern Jewry con
tributed a significant chapter
which is not at an 'end, but is
one of continuing achievement.
TURNING TO MEET
LOCAL NEEDS
While continuing to raise
funds for the United Jewish
Appeal and for the support of
National health, welfare and
cultural agencies, southern
Jewish communities during the
middle fifties, began to turn
their attention to local needs.
This was in line with what was
happening elsewhere in the
country. It was felt that the
acute, critical period of over
seas needs and the economic
crises in Israel had passed and
that local communities could
no longer defer their institu
tional needs. And so an insti
tutional building boom started
which is still going on. New
temples and synagogues be
gan to dot the skyline of many
communities. New Jewish
Community Centers went up
which mirrored community
growth, the increased leisure
available to all, and the con
cern of the community for the
recreational needs of its youth.
These Centers have become
living testimonials to the vital
ity of Jewish communal life
and great civic assets.
During the past two decades
the country has become more
keenly aware of the needs of
the aged population. One
aspect of this has been the
need for nursing, convalescent
and aged homes for those who
can no longer live independent
ly on their own. And so mod
ern Jewish Homes have been
established with proper facil
ities for medical and nursing
care of the chronic ill, and
with adequate programs for
the recreational and occupa
tional needs of the well aged.
Such homes have been^built in
Jacksonville, Miami, Memphis,
Atlanta, New Orleans, and
more recently in Winston
Salem, North Carolina. These
Homes serve areas in the
region beyond their local
boundaries.
In the field of Jewish educa
tion, which will be discussed
iater in greater detail, new
lacilities have been erected in
many communities in the
Southeast. These have been
either as educational buildings
of congregations or as separate
school centers sponsored by
day schools. Of course the
facilities of Jewish Community
Centers are usually made
available for Jewish educa
tional programs and activities.
JEWISH COMMUNITY
GROWTH
It may sound paradoxical to
state that during the past four
decades Jewish communities
in the Southeast have experi
enced substantial community
growth without showing any
appreciable increase in Jewish
population, with the exception
of the marked increase in
Jewish population in two
metropolitan areas, namely.
Metropolitan Atlanta and
Greater Miami. The latter area
has shown an extraordinary
increase in its population.
In 1934 when the writer
visited Miami, for the purpose
ol interest to Jewish lead
ership to begin working toward
the formation of a Federation,
the total Jewish population,
that is the permanent exclud
ing the tens of thousands of
winter tourists, was estimated
as 7,500 persons. In 1937 the
American Jewish year book
still retained the 7,500 esti
mate. In 1948 the Year Book
figure was 40,000. The 1964
edition showed the Jewish
population of Miami based on
studies and estimates, as of
1963, to be 90,000. As of 1965
the writer was told it is prob
ably 95,000. This is indeed
phenomenal. The only other
area that can show compar
able rate of population growth
is Los Angeles, Calif.
Metropolitan Atlanta shows
an increase Jewish population
but not at that rate. In fact
prior to a population study in
1948 the estimate was much
higher. In 1937 the estimate
listed in the year Book was,
12,000. At that time the writer
was told by someone, who was
active in Jewish communal
life and knew Atlanta Jewry
intimately, that the number
would be nearer 10.000. When
the study was completed in
1948 the basic estimate was
shown to be 10,217 persons.
The study used the accepted
techniques in methods in prac
tice at that time. Absences of
students from the public
schools on Yom Kippur, the
number of Jewish deaths in a
given period. A sampling of a
residential area predominant
Jewish, house to house visits
and personal interviews, and
the filling out of question
naires by pupils of the religious
schools, and random number
of organization members.
