L’Chaim!
Guess it had to come sooner
or later—whiskey for the young
and frisky! Yes, Ira H. Cisin, a
research sociologist of Washing
ton, D. C., now advocates a pol
icy whereby college administra
tors are urged to teach young
sters how to drink. The UPI re
lease quotes Cisin: “Drinking can
be dangerous, and the young de
serve to be instructed in its uses
just as they are taught to swim
and drive a car.”
Tongue-in-cheek? I doubt it.
But anyway, this startling state
ment probably won’t meet too
much opposition from Jews.
Seems to me it’s almost in line
with centuries-old Jewish think
ing on the subject. Our holiday
rituals certainly include: “Bore
P’ri Haggofen” for the youngest
child as well as for the oldest!
But what about Jews and their
drinking habits?
L-ast year a report of a study
made by Dr. Herald Mulford of
Ohio University was headlined
with this fact: JEWS DRINK
MORE THAN MEMBERS OF
ANY OTHER RELJGION, top
ping the Catholics by 1%. The
piece went on to reveal that
while only 65 per cent of the
over-all American population
drank 90 per cent of Jews im
bibe.
Ah, but then came the catch.
The basic question put to the
interviewees was worded thusly:
“Do you ever have occasion to
use alcoholic beverages such as
liquor, wine or beer—or are you
a total abstainer?”
Now doesn’t that throw a new
light on the subject, The secret
word is “wine.”’ Among Jews,
even our children begin having
a little wine from time to time
—at least on Pesach.
My only objection to Dr. Mul-
ford’s findings is strictly a matter
of semantics. To my way of
thinking, the phrase would be
more accurately worded “More
Jews drink” . . . than “Jews
drink more ...”
The encouraging thing gleaned
from the study was that though
our percentage of drinkers may
be highest, our ratio of alcohol
ism ranks way down in next to
last place-—with a mere 7 per
cent, while other groups range up
to 17 per cent.
According to Time Magazine’s
recent controversial piece “The
American Jew” (June 25, 1965),
an accounting firm reports it can
always tell the Jewish Country
Club from the Gentile one. At

the Jewish club the food bills
are much higher than the liquor
bills—while it’s the other way
around at the Gentile club.
Don’t these figures indicate
there may be something to be
said for a little libation on spec
ial occasions — even for the
youngsters? If our kids associate
alcohol with accepted procedure
at specified times, will they be
as apt to use it trying to prove
their maturity or whatever?
Small chance. So the proposed
school to teach the drinking
rules may graduate some sober
scholars at that!
My big-shot son David was the
cause of a bit of embarrassment
for me at the lovely home of Is
rael’s Southeastern Consul-Gen
eral Shimon Yallon recently.
While the adults were sipping
coffee and munching elegant
pastry, our gracious hostess Mrs.
Yallon took orders for milk or
soft drinks from the youngsters
present. Perhaps smarting under
my earlier warning (“for good
ness sake, behave yourself!”) 13-
year-old David placed his order
—“Scotch and soda, please.” Talk
about embarrassing moments!
Do I serve him from the bar
at home? An occasional sip if
we are having a drink. Certain
ly he’s not on the road to con
founding the statisticians, though.
So you can well imagine how de
fensive his bright remark made
me feel!
School days, School days,
Dear ole drinking rule days,
Readin’ writin’ ’n
’rithmetic—
Now they’ve added the
whiskey trick.
He was my bashful barefoot
beau—
I was his girl with the
alcohol glow!
Readin’ ’n writin’ ’n
’rithmetic—
Taught to the tune of the
glasses’ click.
Now it’s a boost to a boy
with his liquor
To train him to drink and
not get shilcker!

We Have To Tell You.
Our Delicacies Are
Strictly Second Best.
We got the word in the form of a letter. From
Herb s mother. We feel it is only fair to share
portions of it with you.
"...I am sure you are very nice boys, basically For
47 years I have tried to bring up my Herbie to
associate with nice people only. But that you
should influence my son to the point where he joins
you in claiming that HIS delicacies are the finest
available, well, I don't mind telling you I am very
surprised
"For years do I feed my son only the best so that he
can do business with you and all of a sudden HIS
food is the best 7 Not mine 1 HIS. I ask you, what kind
of gratitude is this that a son should turn on his own
mother?''
So we're making a public apology And we're
sorry you cannot order from Herb s mother
Although our egos are bruised, we hope you II
