sonnel, caught my attention.
It gripped me because when I
saw the headline I had just come
from a visit to a local hospital,
and the officials there were ex
pressing the hope that more girls
would go into nursing.
There’s a Jewish angle here.
For some reason Jewish mothers
are averse to having their daugh
ters study nursing. Once there
may have been reasons for this
tabu, but they are not valid any
longer.
A sensitive person can reap
great emotional rewards from
the profession of nursing. No one
who is not qualified for the
straining labors of a nurse should
become one, but, on the other
hand, it is a pity that many girls
are precluded even irom con
sidering nursing because of il
logical inhibitions.
What with greater prosperity
and increased hospital insurance,
more and more people go to
hospitals for treatment, Beauti
ful hospitals are being built, per
haps not rapidly enough, but
quite briskly. But these struc
tures and the latest equipment
cannot bring health to the ill
without the blessed ministry of
nurses.
So it would be well for young
women to give consideration to
this wonderful art. Jews are
partial to the medical profession.
There is truth in the jest about
the grandmother being asked
the ages of her grandchildren
and replying, “The rabbi is
three, and the doctor is five.”
At least one element in our
glorification of medicine is the
Jewish feeling that it is noble to
relieve suffering. Nurses do that
also, and the profession merits
our support. Personally I have
never visited a hospital without
feeling inspired by the patience
of many nurses.
And, Jewish mothers, there is
another incentive in urging your
daughters to be nurses. If you
will look about you, you will
notice that many Jewish doctors
have married out of their faith.
Why? Because many of them
marry nurses? Why? Because
they were nearby.
Remember that other jest
about the mother who cried out
in the theatre: “Is there a doctor
in the house?” One responded,
and she said “Have I got a girl
for you!”
You want a doctor for a son-
in-law? Have your daughter near
by, and at the same time help
to solve one of this nation’s most
poignant problems: the shortage
of nurses.
