The Rapidly-Growing Atlanta Community
This is another report which followed the recent national
convention of the American Jewish Press in Atlanta. The writer
is Phil Slomovitz, Detroit, and this is a regular column in the
Jewish News which he edits and publishes.
No one seems to know how
many Jews live here now. There
were 12,000 here in 1942. It is
admitted that there are at least
1(1,000 now, but some believe
there may be 20,000.
Whatever the numerical size of
the Jewish population here, it is
a progressive community. The
UJA can well point to Atlanta as
the best Jewish community in the
heart of the South.
And the communal school sys
tem is growing. There is a day
school that goes through the
seventh grade and the Federa
tion has contributed towards the
building fund for the construc
tion of a $750,000 impressive
building and allocates $10,000 a
year towards the day school
budget. This is in itself a • mark
of progress. Cleveland alone is
known to provide full deficit
coverage for its day school pro
gram, and Philadelphia assists
the day school. Judging by what
is happening in Atlanta, other
communities are next.
Atlanta was known 120 years
ago as Marthasville. Jews began
to settle there in 1846. The com
munity now has several impres
sive synagogues and there is a
well functioning Zionist move
ment and a strong Hadassah
chapter.
Atlanta has a number of dis
tinguished Jewish leaders. Ed
Kahn, the retired Federation di
rector, continues to devote him
self to Jewish cause. There are
distinguished women leaders and
Atlantans have contributed to
literary efforts.
A most remarkable Atlantan
is Samuel Rothberg. He is a
realtor, but his entire life is de
voted to Jewish causes. He is an
ardent Zionist, a lover of Israel,
has visited Israel several times
and plans to join the UJA mis
sion again in October. UJA
counts him among its most dedi
cated leaders and contributors.
He is now thinking in “big
terms” in support of the expand
ed UJA secondary education
program and now, at 79, his
prayer is that he may live to
complete his tasks for the good
of America and Israel.
Indeed, at 79 Sam Rothberg is
as virile and as active as a young
ster of 35. He meets all Jewish
guests at the airport, entertains
them and although he lives alone
■—he is a widower—he is a
charming host.
Atlantans have taken a deep
interest in the literary works of
Dr. Alfred A. Weinstein, whose
novel “The Scalpel’s Edge” and
other works have sold extensive
ly enough to go into paperbacks.
Dr. Weinstein passed away a
year ago and bis wife, who Ls an
active leader in congregational
and women’s affairs, continues
to handle the republishing of her
husband's writings.

weekly English-Jewisti newspa-

pers—the Southern Israelite—
and its editor-publisher, Adolph
Rosenberg, proved to be a good
organizer when he arranged with
skill the convention of the
American Jewish Press Associa
tion. He was not “a prophet with
out honor in his own home
town”: more than 300 towns
people came to honor him at a
community banquet during the
convention sessions.
The liberal attitudes of the
rabbis here have helped build up
a good climate for civil rights.
Jews are active in politics and
the role of Vice Mayor Sam Mas-
sell is admirable.
There is an admirable relation-
s h i p between Atlantans and
Jews in other Georgia commun
ities.
