Affairs at Club Barring Jews
NEW YORK (JTA) — The
American Bar Association, which
is holding its annual convention
in Miami Beach in August, has
canceled its arrangements for
two sessions scheduled to be held
at a private club that bars Jews
and other minorities from mem
bership.
Morris B. Abram, president of
the American Jewish Committee,
praised the Bar Association’s de
cision as a “significant step”
which could serve as a “lesson
that discriminatory membership
practices represent a luxury
which few groups can long af
ford.”
The move by the Bar Associa
tion to cancel arrangements for
two of its sessions at the Bath
Club of Miami Beach, was dis
closed in a letter from Lewis F.
Powell Jr. of Richmond, Va.,
president of the American Bar
Association, to Mr. Abram, who
is also the U. S. Representative
on the United Nations Human
Rights Commission.
On June 29, Mr. Abram who is
an attorney, had written to Mr.
Powell, pointing out that Jews
have been “systematically ex
cluded from the Bath Club ex
cept when invited as a guest by
a member.”

LONDON (JTA)— Studies of
susceptibility to cancer among
Jews of European and Oriental
origins in Israel were referred
to here by Professor Peter Bea-
consfield when he disclosed a new
biochemical approach to the un
derstanding and inhibiting the
mechanism of cancer.
Prof. Beaconsfield, formerly a
special research fellow of the
United States Institute of Health
and now a visiting professor at
the Charing Cross Hospital Med
ical School here said that the new
approach centers on the search
for a drug capable of blocking
the over-active nature of the en
zyme or chemical initiator i n
cancer patients. Professor Bea
consfield then cited Israel, where
he said medically well-document
ed people of diverse geographic
origins live under similar envir
onment conditions.
It has already been determined
by Israeli Public Health author
ities that Jews from Middle Eas
tern countries were less likely to
die from cancer than Jews from
Europe. No explanation of this
fact had been made. Professor
Beaconsfield asserted that the
Oriental Jews belong to ethnic
groups known to have a deficien
cy of the enzyme believed to be
instrumental in producing can
cer cells. The deficiency occurs
mainly in males and is transmitt
ed by a gene found in females.
This genetic peculiarity, accord
ing to the medical scholar, is
mostly found in racial groups
that originated around the shores
of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Better Believe Our
Partner Bob Exists.
We have had people ask us about our partner
Bob Because we hadn't mentioned him, they
thought maybe he didn't exist.
He does. And how.
It seems that last week when we checked over
the orders, we were short on a few items
At first we blamed Herb
Then we found the bagel crumbs in Bob's bed
So now you know.
And we promise you THIS week when we make
up the orders, Bob stays home
