ARTS AND CRAFTS
Everything from alligators to
candlesticks in arts and crafts.
All summer long, a sound of
hustle and bustle has been com
ing from the direction of the arts
and crafts workshop out at
Ajecomce Day Camp The camp-
el's started out the season most
creatively by bringing alive paper
mache alligators, an octopus and
a huge turtle, to adorn the camp.
Large murals depicting a circus,
Israel, Indians, and camp activi
ties have hung from tree to tree
during the Ajecomce Arts Fes
tival. Meanwh.ile—back in the
workshop, the individual groups
have been making candle hold
ers, sculpture in clay, wood and
paper leaf and nature prints,
abstracts in all media, mobiles
and a variety of illustrations.
The next big project coming up
is the making of a Maze using
beans, beads and noodles to
hang from tree to tree.
Obviously—fun and artistry is
being had by all.
Pre School Department
The children in Mrs. Robin
son and Miss Sims class high
lighted their study of commun
ity helpers with a visit to the
post office and a fire station.
They saw many mailmen, dif
ferent mail trucks, and all kinds
of stamps at the post office. Con
cluding with mailing a letter-
signed by each of the children
to Mrs. Sacks in Israel.
The fire station was most ex
citing. The children climbed on
the big fire engines and sat in
the drivers seats wearing the big
firemen hats. They saw the fire
men sleep and how they make
a fast get-away when an alarm
is given. The fire chief allowed
some of the children to sound
the sirens on the big ladder
truck.
On returning to the class room
the children made firemen hats,
hoses, trucks, etc. and pretended
to act out this great job of
answering a call to put out a
big fire.
The junior counselor assisting
was Hannah Blau. Mothers who
drove and enjoyed the trip were
Mrs. Paul Muldawer, Mrs. Si
Sater and Mrs. Arnovitz.

Program Self-Study
Steering Committee
Completes Work Sessions
The Steering Committee of the
Atlanta Jewish Community Cen
ter Self Study which has been
in progress since the first of the
year completed a series of four
meetings it was announced by Dr.
Morris Benveniste, Chairman.
Since its inception, the Self-
Study has gone through the fol
lowing stages:
1. In preparing the scope and
method of the study, Manuel
Batshaw, National Program Ser
vices Director of JWB spent
several days in Atlanta during
which he interviewed some twen
ty-five committee chairmen and
other key members of the Board
of the Center. He also met with
the Board of Directors as a group
to explain the purpose and
method of the Self-Study process.
2. Thirteen Self-Study Com
mutes were formed consisting of
presently active members of the
Center. Each committee was
augmented by other individuals
selected at large from the Cen
ter’s membership. Each of these
committees met from two to
four times, and formulated
recommendations regarding, Per
sonnel, Program, Facilities and
Publicity for its department.
When these committees had
concluded their meetings, the
Self-Study Steering Committee
composed of all of the committee
chairmen, officers of the Center
and other selected key individ
uals conducted a series of four
meetings during which each
recommendation of each of the
thirteen Study Committees was
reviewed.
Those recommendations which
were approved and which could
be implemented within our pres
ent budget, facilities and per
sonnel were referred back to the
various permanent committees
for action. Other recommenda
tions were approved or disap
proved and in many cases revised
according to the best judgment
of the Steering Committee.
The remaining recommendations
were divided into two categories.
a) those which involved added
operating expenses requiring re
vision of our budget in order to
be implemented.
b) those which required the
construction of major additional
facilities.
There are three steps remaining
in this study process:
1. The Executive Committee
must familiarize itself with the
recommendations of the Steering
Committee.
2. Those recommendations
which will thenhave the support
of both the Executive Committee
and Steering Committee will be
presented to our Board of Direc
tors.
This presentation is now sched
uled for Wednesday, September
22nd. At that time, Mr. Batshaw
will return to assist us in inter
preting the responsibility of the
study to our Board. It is possible
also that Mr. Sanford Solender,
Executive Vice - President of
JWB may also be present to
relate our study recommenda
tions, to similar trends which
may be taking place throughout
the Center movement.
3. The final phase is to refer
all of the remaining recommen
dations to the appropriate com
mittees for action.
