OPEN AUL NIGHT
Ponce de Leon at Highland
One diabolical thing about
deadlines: they absotively refuse
to take into consideration such
external hazards as vacations and
house-guests and all the other
literary sandtraps. So right this
minute I’m wondering if Vida
will make print this week, or
not!
Last week we paid a flying
visit up to Illinois to see my 82-
year-old dad . . . our first visit
in a year and a half. Back
home—with two of the most
hectic days of grace in between—
in pops my sister, Adele, and her
three youngsters (ages 7, 5, and
3) from Ohio to spend a week
with us.
Sheer bedlam—that’s what it
is. But what a wonderful, heart
warming bedlam.
Some months back in these
pages I lamented on the mobility
of the present generation. One
aspect I didn’t touch on then was
the division of the family entity
that such mobility brings about.
For the generation or two after
our grandfathers or maybe great
grandfathers embarked on the
great adventure of seeking free
dom and a livelihood for their
families in America, the Jewish
family unit welded together in
the sheer wonder of it all. The

aunts and uncles, cousins by the
dozens, grandmother, grandpa and
more distant relatives by the
score lived in the same commun
ity . . . many times in the same
block. The family was every
thing, and such a turnout for
various simcha you never saw.
These days our families wind
up scattered to all corners. The
full-scale family reunion is per
haps a once-a-decade affair.
When we hit my hometown on
our trip this summer, my kids
were absolutely flabbergasted at
the sheer number of relatives.
Why, there were relatives there
the children didn’t even know
they had. When an old friend
dropped in to say hello, one of
my children said, “Mommy, you
mean somebody here isn’t re
lated to us?” (Not many weren’t,
I’ll confess.)
Now, with Del and her darlings
here with us, we all have a
chance to get reacquainted. The
absolute urgency of such a visit
became apparent to Del when
her Danny, not quite five, snug
gled up to her in the middle of a
discussion and plaintively in
quired, “Mother, do you think
Mr. Goldgar would like me?”
“Why, Honey,” Del answered,
“he’s Uncle Mike not Mr. Gold
gar.” Still, it took a lot of con
vincing to get the family feeling
across.
Now I ask you: Isn’t it time to
get the cousins together when
they get that distant in their
feelings?
So we’ve been spending this
week getting reacquainted like
crazy. Sure there’ve been squab
bles. Mix up seven children
(with five of them under nine
years old) in close quarters and
you can’t help it. In fact, Adele
and I’ve had a couple of sisterly
spats ourselves.
Don’t know why it is, but at
long distance we’re ever so
close . . . letters are warm and
phone calls almost gooey. While
after a few days together, sooner
or later some silly disagreement
is bound to pop up. They don’t
last long, of course.
So tomorrow we’ll fold up the
daybeds and the army cot; take
the leaves out of the table and
settle back to our correspond
ence.
But, gosh, it’s been great to be
together. cl 965

Will Success Spoil
Lenny Bagel?
We thought perhaps it might.
You see, we have to get up fairly early to make
the deliveries on Sunday. And since Lenny usually
spends about two hours in the morning on his
appearance, this drastically cuts into his schedule
But we should have known.
Lenny had the answer.
A little traveling kit So he can carry all his bottles,
tubes, cans and jars WITH him and go through the
the morning ritual between deliveries.
We'd like to put a stop to it.
So far, no luck.
But we have hope.
Some Sunday morning, perhaps, one of our
customers will give Lenny the word
So maybe success spoils Lenny Bagel.
Better that than the Jade East should spoil
the herring.
