Seems there’s a new crisis hit
ting the daytime Jewish organ
izations ... a real womanpower
shortage at the top echelon.
What’s behind it? Too many of
the active members going into
the business world.
Of course, it’s nothing new to
‘ help Poppa in the store”—we’ve
been doing that for ages. But a
family business schedule was
usually flexible enough so we
could keep up our meeting sched
ule.
I’m afraid if this trend con
tinues it could undermine all our
daytime groups to a fantastic de
gree.
Just imagine this situation:
Comes spring—the slate is set
with officers guaranteed to take
the group onward and upward to
better fund raising, increased
membership and exciting pro
gramming. Everybody’s- happy.
Okay?
Then the first blow! The sec

Hamburg Mayor
Tells Jews City
Will Pay Damages
BAMBERG, W. Germany
(JTA)—Mayor Theodor Mathieu
informed the head of the Jewish
community here that the city will
pay for the material damage res
ulting from the overthrow of
tombstones and their desecration
by swastikas in the Jewish ce
metery here. In that anti-Semitic
action, over a month ago, 23
graves were smeared and over
turned. The cost of repairing the
material damage is expected to
be about 15.000 marks (nearly
$4,000).
The puzzling situation here is
the fact that the local police has,
so far, not succeeded in appre
hending the perpetrators of that
anti-Semitic act and of other,
similar anti-Jewish acts, despite
the condemnation of these man
ifestations by the city officials,
press and population Nor have
the regional police authorities
discovered as yet any clue to the
smearers of Nazi swastikas and
anti-Jewish slogans in this city,
which has a very small Jewish
population.

shattering message . . . she’s
going to work. Please put her on
inactive duty.
Not too bad so far . . . there’s
bound to be an enthusiastic chair
man ready to step in.
But does it stop there? Not on
your life. The plague spreads.
The secretary’s out; there goes
the hospitality chairman . . same
reason. Soon the ranks are de
pleted by all that prize material,
so carefully nurtured over the
years.
What’s behind this blight that’s
attacking the flower of organiza-
tionhood? Economics? Sometimes
. . . Jerry needs orthodontia;
hubby’s business is slow; she
wants to redecorate. Yet, others
have told me it actually costs
them money to work. Doesn’t
surprise me a bit. What with
child care, wardrobe extras,
transportation, lunches—it takes
a hefty paycheck to come out
even. So what then?
Could be the rash of recent
articles has made it almost in
decent to enjoy being a plain
garden-variety housewife.
Why, even the tax collectors
frown at that term. Once, filling
out my county form, the gentle
man asked, “Occupation?” To
my reply of housewife, he grinn
ed and said, "I’ll just put down
‘homemaker’—it sounds better.”
But why do so many of these
new Tillie-the-Toilers come from
the front lines of the women’s
clubs? Here’s my theory.
By the time Susie Q. has come
up through the ranks from tele
phone committee to executive
board, her tots have gotten into
school. Some of the pressure's
off. The very drive and ability
that make her officer material
may well lead her to direct this
energy into at least a part-time
job. Thus combating the let
down that often goes hand-in-
hand with the new freedom.
Whatever the reasons— some
thing's got to he done! Guess we
better step up grooming those
younguns. Maybe we can even
prevail on the retired grandmo
thers to lend their experience
once again.
My feeling is this may be a
temporary thing. After all, busi
ness can become just as routine
as housekeeping once the glam
our wears off. Still, with the new
"no discrimination because of
sex” law—who knows where ii
could lead! We better take a leaf
from the Boy Scouts and Be
Prepared. el 965
