DEATH OF THE DUAL
LOYALTY SMEAR
GUEST EDITORIAL
From the beginnings of political Zionism, enemies have
accused Zionists of bearing ‘dual loyalties’, both to their home
land and to Zion redeemed and later, to the State of Israel
The American Zionist movement has always affirmed that
it operates within a context of complete loyalty to the United
States of America; that it regards support of the State of
Israel, a firm friend of the US.A. and a stable democracy,
as completely consistent with loyalty to our own country.
This affirmation has been endorsed by every American presi
dent and presidential candidate, by Republicans and Demo
crats, by governors, legislatures, and responsible citizens.
Nonetheless, it is rejected by the enemies of Zionism.
With the appointment of Mr. Justice Goldberg to the UN
comes the death of such a smear. The newspapers reported
that when considering the appointment, President Johnson
and his advisers never took seriously the notion that Goldberg
might be a less effective spokesman for the U.S.A. because
of his Jewish and Zionist commitments. It did not strike
anyone as a problem worthy of consideration.
Mr. Goldberg is a very warm supporter of Zionism and
Judaism. The President, the State Department, the Admini
stration as a whole found nothing in such a commitment to
cast doubt on the whole and undivided loyalty of its holder
to the U.S.A.
The fact is that Zionism’knd Americanism stand for the
same ideals: democracy, peace, and progress, at home and
abroad.
There can be no conflict of loyalty, and if, God forbid, the
interest of the State of Israel conflicted with that of the
U.S.A., there can be no doubt whatever about American Zion
ists and Jews, whose loyalty is one, undivided, and American.
In a very practical way, President Johnson has demonstrated
his conviction of the truth of that fact.
The response of the Arab press in Jordan and Egypt has
nothing to do with Zionism. They call Goldberg’s appoint
ment an affront to “Arab nationalism.” No Jew, they say,
should hold high office in the U.S.A. This is out-and-out
anti-Semitism, and is recognized as such—and abhorred—by
all civilized men.
We do not believe that “Arab nationalism and anti-
Semitism (in the modem, political sense of the world) need to
be synonymous. Jews everywhere will rejoice in the day
when the Arab countries, particularly the neighbors of the
State of Israel, will achieve genuine progress, social, political,
economic, and cultural, and so win for their countries their
rightful place in the leadership of world civilization.
Islam is a universal faith, preaching submission to one
God, creator of heaven and earth. There is nothing petty,
narrow, or benighted in that great faith, which Judaism has
always regarded as true monotheism.
We pray that we shall all see the day when the universal,
civilizing, humane spirit of Islam, which led the civilization
of east and west alike during its first great centuries, will
recapture the heart of Arab nationalists.
Zionism and Arab nationalism in that day will be part
ners in building their region, the cradle of civilization, and
together foster the illumination of all mankind by the light
of the ancient and renewed east. Kadimah!

“Our Brothers The Jews”
Shows Sephardic Shule
MADRID, (WUP) — To the surprise of the Jewish com
munity here as well as to most Spaniards, the Franco regime
issued a postage stamp last week depicting the historic Toledo
synagogue.
The local newspaper, Hoja del Lunes," announced the
issuance of the stamp in a lengthy article in which it referred
to “our brothers the Jews.”
The release of the stamp, so prominently publicized by
the government-controlled press, was viewed here as one
more move of many in recent months pointing to the Franco
regime’s efforts to bring about greater religious freedom to
and tolerance of non-Catholic minorities in the nation,
especially benefitting the Jewish communities.

What The Press Is Saying
Israel’s two million Drama Critics
One of the special previews of the Tel
Aviv production of “Fiddler on the Roof” was
for the Israeli Army. It was on the day of the
border incident with Lebanon-Jordan. A man
stationed in the box office, next to the special
telephone line to the Defense Ministry, Joe
Stein, author of the musical’s book, advised
the cast: “Act fast, or we might lose our audi
ence.” Wherever he went, Stein had to an
swer arguments about the casting, plot and
characterizations of the classic. When he was
asked how many drama critics Israel has, he
said: “About 2,000,000, I guess.’”

FOR KICKS
Our printing plant sets type for a number
of organizations such as Hadassah, Alpha
Omega, Oglethorpe U., Atlanta Jewish Com
munity Center, Grady Hospital and Grady
High School—and a variety of other groups.
The last few days, while proofing all the
type in the shop preparatory to our Rosh
llashonah editions—and the subsequent new
and doubtless rush season, thLs delightful bit
of flotsam came to light. We cannot at this
instant attribute it to any publication of the
groups mentioned and though it hasn t the
slightest Jewish content, we thought we’d
pass it on for kicks and a change of pace.
When the tarantula has remained in his new
environment for a day or two, it comes time to
give him the run of the house. Approach the
door of the room cautiously. It is advisable to
listen through the door for the clatter of thim
bles. If you can hear him clattering across the
floor, you know that he is moving about and has
adapted splendidly. However, if no sound can
be heard, do not open the door. The absence of
sound indicates that your tarantula is pouting
in some dark corner and has rejected his new
environment. He may hold some animosity to
ward you because you are responsible for plac
ing him in these unfamiliar surroundings. If this
is the case, let him remain for a few days more.
Usually after this second incubation period the
tarantula is completely adapted. If he isn’t, you
have probably acquired a tarantula who is in
capable of response to training or who has some
deep rooted phycological problem, such as a
hatred for hardwood floors or a dislike for
thimbles.
But we shall turn our attention to the taran
tula that does respond. The day has finally ar
rived. You are ready to let him out of the room.
You approach the door and open it. As if he feels
somehow the faith you have invested in him, he
triumphantly clatters toward you. Marching past
you and into the living room, much to the sur
prise of the defenseless family. He immediately
proceeds to make himself at home. In a week oi
two he Ls just like another member of the family.
He romps and plays with your little brother, who
seems to find great amusement in dispatching
him on the trail of roaches and mice.
Another week passes. The thimbles have been
removed and your tarantula has become part of
your daily routine.
Two months pass and as always you come
home from school and throw open the front door.
There he stands in all his glory. In an instant
he rushes toward you with all the speed a taran
tula can muster. He is at your foot, your knees,
your waist, and in another instant he is affec
tionately nibbling at your neck.
But suddenly you become nauseated. This is a
sure sign that your tarantula is a species belonging
to the deadly poisonous Central European Black
Tarantula, which develops poison glands after
two months in captivity. If this be the case, it is
advisable to dispose of him as quickly and as
painlessly as possible (boiling oil perhaps) and
take up another hobby. Try decorating pottery
smuggled in over the Mexican liorder, until the
end finally comes.

Peking — Arab Protector
Red China, by offering training facilities
and arms to anti-Israeli Arab guerrillas, is
jockeying today for position as the self-pro
claimed protector of Islam. The first known
contingent of Palestinian Al-Fatah com
mandoes, who have been operating against
T srael mainly from bases in Syria, has already
been welcomed in Peking. This vanguard—a
dozen or so—is supposed to have successfully
carried out terror missions inside Israel. They
will be trained in guerrilla tactics at assorted
camps within Communist China. . . It was
just a year ago that Red China launched a
three-continent drive against Israel — in
Africa, Asia and Latin America. The main ob
jective was to win friends and influence
among Arab regimes by attacking Israel as an
outpost of “American imperialism.” Working
steadily behind the scenes, Chinese inter
mediaries have now managed to persuade the
Palestine Arab exiles organization that the
regime of Mao Tse-tung is its best friend. The
hidden persuader was Egyptian president
Gamel Abdel Nasser’s reservations about
springing to the armed “liberation” of Israel
for the Arabs. Red Chinese activist interven
tion puts Col. Nasser on the spot and helps
dim the diplomatic defeat China suffered in
postponement of the second Afro-Asian con
ference in Algiers. The Cairo-based Palestine
Liberation Organization opened offices last
spring in Peking on the initiative of Cou
En-lai. This was arranged in a protocol agree
ment, signed by Premier Chou, whose office
defrays expenses and living costs of the exile
representatives. One of the principal go-be
tweens for the Palestinian Arabs was report
ed to be the foxy ex-Mufti of Jerusalem
During World-War II he worked for the Nazis
and now makes his headquarters in Damascus.

TALMUDIC
TREASURES
Collected and Translated
By Jacob L. Friend
"PIRKEL AVOTH” /
• Shemayah and Avtalyon said: Love work;
bate lordship; and seek no intimacy with the
ruling power. To this warning, Rabban
Gamliel makes the following injunction: For
they who exercise it draw no man near to
them except for their own interests; appear
ing as friends when it is to their own ad
vantage, they stand not by a man in the hour
of his need.
• Hillel and Shammai said. Be of the dis
ciples of Aaron, loving peace and pursuing
peace, loving thy fellow creatures and draw
them near to the Torah and learning.
• Another dictum of Hillel. If I am not for
myself (that is: If I do not rouse my soul to
higher things) who will rouse it? And if I
am only for myself only (selfish and greedy)
what am I? (Helpfulness is the sign of human
ity. It was only Cain who asked: Am I my
brother’s keeper?)
• Shammai said: Fix a period for thy stud
ies; say little and do much and receive all men
with cheerful countenence. (Studies should
not be a matter of occasion or casualty. The
righteous promise little, and perform'much.
The wicked promise much and do not per
form even a little, is said in another place
in Talmud. Have a friendly manner in all your
dealing with men.)
• Simon the son of R. Gamliel said: All my
Jays I have grown up among the wise, and
i have found no better service than silence;
not learning but doing and practicing is the
chief thing (Silence is good for the wise; how
much more so for the foolish. “Even a fool
u hen he holdeth his peace, is counted wise,’’
declares Solomon, the wisest of Kings. The
aim of our learning is not just theoretical, but
practical, and its purpose is to regulate our
conduct in life.)
• Rabban Simon, son of Gamliel, said: The
world is preserved by three things: By truth,
by judgement and by peace: as it is said:
Judge ye the truth and the Judgement of
Peace in your gates. (Justice is truth in action,
in contrast to lawless might. The tragedy of
the world throughout history is becaiiuse
iustice is often being denied. In another
Talmudic aphorism we find the following
The three are really one; If judgement is
executed, truth is vindicated, and peace
results.)
