SANTIAGO, Chile (JTA) —
Raul Cardinal Silva Henriquez,
Archbishop of Santiago, address
ed a capacity audience in the
largest synagogue here, last
weekend. He lectured on the
theme of “respect for the individ
ual in the Old Testament,” and
asserted that, at this time, on
the eve of the fourth session of
the Ecumenical Council to be
convened at the Vatican in Sep
tember, the Catholic Church is
conscious of the thought that “all
men have bonds to the people of
God.”
Considered throughout Latin
America as one of the foremost
progressives in the Catholic
Church, Cardinal Henriquez thus
(>ointed up his continued inter
est in having the Ecumenical
Council adopt definitively the
Declaration on Relations with
Non-Christians, passed by the
Council’s last sesion, last win
ter. That declaration would re
pudiate once and for all the
charges of dedicide against the
Jewish people, and would de
nounce anti-Semitism. Cardinal
Henriquez cooperated with the
late Pope John XXIII in the
Vatican’s move to absolve the
Jews of the deicide accusation.

UNITED NATIONS (WUP) -
Justice Arthur J. Goldberg, the
new U. S. Ambassador to the
United Nations, is one of three
Honorary Chairmen of the pro
jected Jewish Center for the UN
which is being sponsored by the
Sutton Place Synagogue situated
not far from the world organi
zation here. His co-chairmen are
Senator Jacob K. Javits and
Abraham Ribicoff.
Appearing as the main speaker
at the Inaugural Dinner of the
Center, held at the Waldorf-As
toria Hotel on May 2, Justice
Goldberg referred to the UN as
"the world’s best hope for a last
ing peace.”
Hailing the projected Jewish
Center, Goldberg declared: “On
an occasion such as this one, it
is fitting to renew our dedica
tion to the United Nations. The
UN quest for peace has been
based upon the theory that
’since wars begin in the minds of
men, it is in the minds of men
that the defenses of peace must
be constructed’.”
Appraising the role of the UN,
the noted jurist stated: “The
crisis, both diplomatic and finan
cial, currently faced by the
United Nations hover like a spec
ter over the arena of interna
tional politics. Before giving way
to pessimism, however, we should
remember the numerous achieve
ments of the UN in the 20 short
'ears since its foundation. Only
two years after its creation, the
withdrawal of Russian troops
from Iran was arranged through
the UN. It played a part in the
creation of Israel Aggression was

tions Within the past few years
we have seen potential sparks
that in other times might well
have set off major conflicts ex
tinguished by United Nations ac
tivities in Suez, the Congo, and
Cyprus. And, we have witnessed
wide attention here. He had been
invited to deliver the lecture by
the recently-formed Committee
of Christian-Jewish Fraetrnity,
headed by a Jew, Gil Sinay. Co
sponsoring the events were vir
tually all leading Jewish organ-
i/.ations here, including the Tem
ple B’ne Israel congregation, the
Jewish Community of Chile and
the local section of the Women’s
International Zionist Organiza
tion. Mr. Sinay is the president
of United Hias Service in Chile.
The Cardinal’s address was
greeted by the large audience
with an enthusiastic standing
ovation. The leading Chilean
newspapers featured reports of
the address as an outstanding ex
ample of fraternal Christian-
Jewish relations in this country.
The Cardinal explained his ap
pearance in a synagogue by de
claring:
“For a better understanding of
my attitude, it should be remem
bered that the thought of the
Catholic Church at this moment
of the Council is one of broad
understanding for human values.
For all men have bonds to the
people of God and. in the first
place certainly, the people who
were entrusted with the divine
alliances and promises and of
whom Christ was born in the
flesh.”
political power from European
nations to newly independent
states — a transfer that could
hardly have taken place so peace
fully had the UN not been in
existence. Moreover, the work of
the United Nations in providing
economic aid and technical assis
tance to the emerging nations, its
role in facilitating international
cooperation in such areas as the
peaceful uses of atomic energy,
and its undertakings to assure
greater reffpect for human rights
are all well known.”

A memorial fund has been es

cardiac monitoring center.
Mr Litwin. who died in April
at the age of 34. was president

daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam

The Robert F. Litwin Cardiac

constant watch over patients with
heart functioning difficulties.
In the center, which will cost
approximately $85,000, teams of
specialized nurses will be able to
monitor up to 20 cardiac patients
at the same time. This will pro

its current offering.
“Richard III” is sensitively
cast and comes off with a smooth
texture which belies its razor
edge highpoints. We’re trying to
say that the play itself is not the
Avon bard's most subtle. The
villians are the worst, its inno
cent the naivist, its connivers the
craftiest so that players who are
not Broadway seasoned can let
themselves go, have fun and act
loose without pulling out the

most.
Anyway, Richard III got
through to us as probably the
most convincing and best done
in the Academy’s brief years of
creditable "Shakespearan Festi
vals.”
This production continues
through August 14.
At the Theatre Under the
the UN as an historic move on
the part of Jewry since, he said,
“it is a reaffirmation of faith in
the world organization, a reaf
firmation of confidence in religi
ous liberty, tolerance and that
freedom of the human spirit
which the UN and its Secretaries
General continually seek.”
The spirit behind the Jewish
Center tor the United Nations is
Rabbi David B. Kahane, spiritual
leader of the Sutton Place Syn
agogue.. The idea was originally
conceived by UN Security Of
ficer Mitchell Goldstein and this
writer. In a WUP dispatch re
leased for October 2 1964, en
titled “Needed: a Cultural-Religi
ous Jewish Center Near World
Organization,” this writer urged
American Jewish leaders to take
up the challenge and build a UN
Jewish Center nearby the world
organization. Rabbi Kahane, who
had had a similar idea in mind,
was the first to accept the chal
lenge. The results have been
phenomenally successful.
