Friday, September 24, 1965 THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE NEW YEAR MESSAGE To Lie Down In Peace By RABBI JACOB M. ROTHSCHILD The Temple, Atlanta What a wonderful and terrifying world we live in. We can transmit a picture from Mars to earth but can not clearly see the slums next door. We can put men in space, keep them there, bring them back again but cannot safely journey to many an earthly land where guns blaze and hatred.' flare. We lonj to find livind beings similar j t o ourselve; on some far! distant planet but we have! not been able I to live at peace with all the 1 inhabitants of our own. We have mastered the mystery of the atom but use it only for our own potential destruc tion. We stand helpless and confused in the presence of problems that defy solution. Sincere New Year’s Greetings to all our Friends THE New World Club ATLANTA, GA. —Where We Study A New World— ROBERT SCHARF President ERIC JACOBSON Secretary TR. 6-6679 lost in a frightening world which we have made but can not control. It is not always easy to look hopefully toward tomorrow. It is all the more difficult for us who have our being in the fearful present of today. Yet, to bring hope and courage is the specific purpose of our High Holyday observance. On Rosh Hashonah we acknowl edge the power and goodness of God. On Yom Kippur, we assess our own responsibility. Renewed faith in God and in ourselves, says Judaism, can help make the night less dark, the terror less paralyzing— and the morrow less fear some. We come to the New Year desperately seeking courage and hope. Where can we find it if not deep within ourselves and how can we find it even there without the acknowledgment of God’s presence in our lives? For at least this one brief moment in time, we seek not superficial, worldly gifts. We ask not power or wealth, nor yet comfort and ease and ephemeral happiness. We ask a seemingly simple boon. Our request is movingly couched in the words of our prayer- book: “Cause us, O Lord, to lie down each night in peace and to awaken each morning to renewed life and strength. That is all we want—to go to bed at night in serenity of spirit and security of body and to wake up again eager to meet the new day and un afraid of what it will bring. It would seem that a complex and threatening world re duces our aspirations to the most basic and simple of de sires. But these basic and simple hopes are the very essence of human striving. If “At this time of the year we want to thank all our members and friends for their support and to wish them a very Happy and Prosperous New Year, 1965 — 5726 . . . JEWISH HOME Atlanta, Georgia these danger-filled days and years have done nothing else they have helped us to see what is important and what is not. Let us then, on this day of the New Year put aside des pair and conquer fear. Let our prayers sustain and hearten us even in the face of man’s great failure to fulfill his promise. Man has it in his hands to create a world of infinite promise. May he find it in his heart to fashion it for worth and beauty. With deepened determination and rediscovered confidence let us face the New Year with renewed hope and faith. “Watchman, what of the night?’’ It will pass and bright day come again—if we strive to create a world in which all men can lie down in peace. We pray that we may become achieve a Happy New Year God’s helpers in the creation for ourselves and all man- of such a world and thus kind.
