White House Parley Reassures U. S.
Support on Soviet Jewish Issue
WASHINGTON (JTA)-^Jewish
leaders Monday emerged from
meetings with top White House
officials and State Department
authorities, reassured that the
Eternal Light Vigil was an ef
fective move toward ameliorating
the plight of Soviet Jewry, and
promised U. S. Government sup
port at the United Nations and
at various other levels of contact
between the United States and
Russia. The group, comprised of
delegates of the 24 organizations
that make up the American Jew
ish Conference on Soviet Jewry,
met for over an hour at the
White House with President
Johnson’s leading adviser on
foreign policy, McGeorge Bundy,
Special Assistant on National
Security Affairs, and Special
Counsel Lee White.
Rabbi Seymour J. Cohen, of
Chicago, chairman of the steer
ing committee of the American
Jewish Conference on Soviet
Jewry, spoke for the group when
it emerged from the White
House. He said the group was
“reassured” that American Gov
ernment interest in the Soviet
Jewish situation would be “am
plified” on different levels. This
would include action at the
United Nations at Commission on
Human Rights, in formal diplo
matic exchanges, and on a peo-
ple-to-people level, he said.
The rabbi felt the Government
showed a deep and sincere inter
est in the fate of Soviet Jewry.
The hour-long meeting at the
White House included a review
and assessment of the situation
generally, and a report on the
Vigil. Different aspects of the
problem were discussed, including
various aspects of measures
President Johnson could or should
take.
An evaluation of the latest de
velopments, Rabbi Cohen said,
shows “the Soviet Union is not
insensitive” to protests and
“there is the beginning of pin
pricks of light in a very dark
situation.” He thought it uncer
tain how far this tendency would
extend, but was convinced that
the Vigil and similar activities
were the proper path to pursue
until Soviet Jewry attains at least
the same level of cultural and re
ligious rights accorded other So
viet minorities.
(Reports received by the Jew
ish Telegraphic Agency indicated
that local observances of the
Vigil against Soviet Jewish pers
ecutions will be held in various
important centers of American
Jewry around the country. Among
such events definitely scheduled
are rallies to be held in Chicago,
I.os Angeles and Mobile, Ala.)
It was indicated that direct
and formal intercession by the
United States Government was
considered a less effective stra
tegy than less formal commun
ications through diplomatic and
other channels.
State Depar tment officials
stressed at another meeting that
direct intercession might back
fire and do Soviet Jewry more
harm than good. The Department
felt the issue should be kept alive
at various levels but that a Pas
sive demarche by the United
States through formal diplomatic
channels was undesirable. Soviet
authorities would interpret this
as an unwarranted intrusion by
a foreign power into domestic af
fairs, it was explained.
The Department, howe v e r ,
thought well of maintaining pub
lic awareness of the problem and
responses through such meetings
as the Vigil. In the Department’s
view, it was learned, sweeping
charges should not be made

announced that the JWV, under
his command, will accelerate its
nationwide campaign against the

was elected national judge ad

In commenting on his project
ed visit to Moscow, Mr. Waldor
said an approach on a “veteran-

useful. He said that, since both
American and Soviet veterans of
World War II took part In the

Switzerland House Restaurant
Receives National Award
Mr. G. D. Crain, Jr., chairman
and publisher of Advertising &
Sales Promotion, well known na
tional advertising publicaton,
has announced that the Swtzer-
land House Restaurant letterhead
received an “Award of Distinc
tion.”
The letterhead was created and
designed by Richard Heiman Ad
vertising Agency of Atlanta.
Lithography was by Fred Wor-
rill Direct Mail and blind em
bossing was by J. M. Marbut
Company, both also of Atlanta.
The award was one of 13 in the
entire United States. Some 428
entries were submitted for con
sideration. A formidable panel of
nationally known judges an
nounced the awards. The Swit
zerland House was the only win
ner in the Southeast and Rich
ard Heiman Advertising was the
only designer cited for award in
the Southeast. The contest is con
sidered America’s foremost let
terhead competition.
Pictured above, from left to
right, are Otto Meier, chef de
cuisine, and Ronald Spetalnick,
co-owners of the Switzerland
House Restaurant, and Richard
Heiman. Duplicate plaques were
awarded to the advertising agen
cy, and the two printers.
Tlbe Switzerland House Res
taurant is an exciting and auth
entic representation of Swiss-
European charm. It occupies the
location formerly containing the
King’s Inn in the Atlanta Ca
bana Motor Hotel at 870 Peach
tree Street, N. W. Mr. Spetalnick
and Mr. Meier oNvn the new
Switzerland House and there is
no relationship whatsoever be
tween it and its predecessor. Only
the location is the same.
Most impressive backgrounds
in the restaurant field are held
by the two new owners. They
have created and operated some
of the outstanding restaurants in
the world including the Bras
serie, the Trattoria, the Zum
Zum and the Tavern on the
Green. Their special fortes are
Swiss, French, German and Ital
ian cuisine They were both
chef-schooled in Switzerland and
are perhaps two of America’s
most experienced and best qual
ified restaurateurs. The Switzer
land House represents their first
“real” restaurant. That is to say,
this is the first time they have
owned a restaurant themselves.
Accordingly, as Ronnie Spetal
nick puts it, “It’s the first res
taurant we’ve ever owned, it’s
different from anything we’ve
ever done, and we have a very
special incentive to make it truly
great.” And from the way it is
going, we might add, Mr. Spet-
alnick’s aspiration is fast be
coming a reality.
The charming multi-colored
“distressed” bricks are exposed;
Swiss-inspired, hand painted flo
ral ornamentation adorns col
umns, chairs and woodwork. The
multi-lingual waiters and serv
ice personnel were brought here
from Europe and are costumed
in authentic replicas of Swiss
canton attire. Chandeliers are
antiqued, ornate Swiss cow bells
are hung throughout the restau
rant, and one entire wall is de
voted to a series of rare pan
oramic Swiss countryside scenes.
The wide selection of meticul
ously prepared European cuisine
with American options are serred
with traditional Swiss grace and
are offered at popular prices.
And the atmosphere . . . truly
charming, in the finest Swiss-
European tradition!
