Hits - Splits - Bowling Bits
By EDDIE SILVERBOAJCD
AJCC Mens’ League
Well, things started popping
Thursday nite in the men’s lea
gue, including backs, blood ves
sels, and eye-balls . . . Most im
portant was the league’s first
BAWLER OF THE WEEK, who
also has the distinction of being
the first new Center member en
rolled in the Membership Drive
—a lusty 7 lb. kid by the name
of Curtis Benjamin Post, the
property of Mr. and Mrs, Harold
Post, our new Physical Ed Direc
tor—talk about setting-up exer
cises, I hope the new addition
doesn’t make Harold overdo it—
congrats to the entire family! . . .
Now from bawling to bowling
. . The first decent set was roll
ed by the new Doe Cohen, now
on Miltowns to keep his toes from
being fractured, who had a pret
ty good 233-588 series that
should hold up for at least the
next six days . . . Second high
man was Newcomer Sandy
(Wings) Winston, ace pilot among
his many other accomplishments,
who soared to a high 200 game
and a 549 count—this guy may
he one of the better bowlers, if
he doesn’t go into a tailspin be
fore the season is over with . . .
Veteran Harris Silverman came
in third with a 211 single and a
529 total, which included a neat
128 game (man, this column just
ain’t any fun unless I can needle
somebody) ... In the high
singles, only one worth mention
ing — Ed (Skater) Rechtman
found the going as smooth as
those windshields he’s selling and
glided to a 204 before hitting thin
ice his other two games . . .
This year there’s a change in
policy in this column—after all,
why write about the good games
all the time—let somebody else
get their names in here—so we
will publish a few duds, if you
don’t mind, like these beauties .
. . Herb (Wheels) Mendel, top
used car dealer In the South,
evidently bowled with a ball
bearing to get a 107 single . . .
Icky (Bootlegger) Orenstein, star
athlete in the 1940’s, finally
started showing his Ancient Age
by downing the pins with a
breathtaking 122 . . .
Bill Sullivan, alias Willie Sol-
oman, the parking lot exec, prob
ably dented more fenders in a
one-hour period, than pins, dur
ing a hectic 116 battle . . . And
this story is going the rounds—
Ace Bowler Murray Gordon
had his bowling hand insured
three weeks ago by Lloyds of
London for one million dollars,
and last week he bowled so b?d-
ly darned if he didn’t get a check
in full—the company paid off
after the final game, which was
a dazzling 111 . Usually we
don’t mention the scores of sub
stitutes, but one last nite was so
extraordinary it really just
couldn’t be overlooked—■
Bernie Smith, the well-known
Baron of the Barrels, who looks
as much like a bowler as I do
a weight-lifter, surprised the en
tire league with a tremendous
247 single and a 607 series in his
first appearance in a league
Congratulations

game—whether it was worth it
or not we’ll never know, ’cause
seven bowlers immediately turn
ed in their resignations! . . .
The league has added about 30
new bowlers this season, which
is a pleasant happening, and
among them we’re happy to have
Jerry Barmann, who is doing
such a fine job as President of
the Shearith Israel Mr. and Mrs.
Bowling League—Jerry wants to
let the members know that they
still have a few openings in this
league, so if you want to enjoy
your Sunday evenings and get
some good exercise at the same
time, besides hearing all the
latest gossip, call him at once!
from all the Silverboards, and
that includes Kenny too, altho
we aren’t on speaking terms as
yet ... He did get one offer for
adoption, from Eva and Sholom
Held, but he turned it down be
cause they have daughters only
(two dolls) and he’s afraid they
just wouldn’t know how to handle
a son . . We’re still open for
an offer, tho—any kind!
That’s the tenth frame—see you
in the alleys next week!
