Member Stealing!
Crime Without Rhyme
In most Jewish communities,
particularly the smaller ones, it
is looked on by Those in Authori
ty as the solemn duty of each
Jew to join each and every or
ganization. In my town there’s
such an overlapping of member
ship that people are pulled in
several directions. We all like to
claim that OUR pet group is com
pletely free of taint of jealously,
competitiveness or member-steal
ing from our fellow groups.
Tain’t necessarily so. Don’t know
too much about the men’s groups.
But the gals are a different sto
ry!
First intimation of trouble
seems to come between those or
ganizations whose primary bene
fits accrue to the American scene
and those mainly dedicated to
helping Israel. Yes, there are
those who manage to keep mem
bership going on both sides of
the fence. I consider them to be
the true diplomats . . . with tal
ents as unique as the UNers.
But what of the competition
between the individual Israel-
helping groups? What of the ri
valry between each of the out
fits working for various Ameri
can projects? This is all on top of
the main category competition.
And, not too far behind, are those
little sniping remarks members

What of all this competition
over membership? Is it real? Is
it healthy?
Well, this is the answer many
club leaders give: “Judaism in
America today has become a cul
ture of organizations.”
Perhaps you’d be surprised to
know that I heard that statement
not long ago at a meeting of one
of those self-same organizations.
I fear it’s true to a dangerous
extent. My 1965 American Jew
ish Yearbook, hot off the press,
lists more than 258 national Jew
ish organizations, associations, in
stitutions and the like. A break
down indicates the largest num
ber of these are religion and
education oriented — with Zion
ist and pro-lsrael a close second.
The balance seem to be fairly
evenly distributed among Com
munity Relations, Cultural, Over
seas Aid, Social-Mutual Benefit
and Social Welfare.
Doesn’t that seem to you an
enormous lot of "organizing” for
a Jewish population only slight
ly over 54 million? It does to
me.
This data goes on to list some

college organizations (not includ
ing so-called "Jewish fraterni
ties and sororities”) A great
many of my readers probably
don’t realize we also have such
groups as the Hebrew Veterans
of the War with Spain (1899).
Then there’s the Jewish Agricul
tural Society. And my total also
includes the Jewish Conciliation
Board of America which “adjusts
and conciliates disputes involv
ing Jewish individuals and or
ganizations.”
Just for fun I whipped out my
sharp pencil and some scrap pa
per. Dividing the total population
by the number of organizations,
here’s the figure (of small bene
fit) we come up with! If the
total Jewish population, man,
woman and child, were evenly
distributed — club-wise — each
group would only have about
22,000 members.
Are we quite fair to ourselves

help by not attempting some sort
of consolidation?
Somehow it is beyond me to
determine why we can’t have
some greater cooperation and
less fussing and fuming and com
petition for membership, funds
and meeting priority. This is not
to detract from the individual
good done by each organization—

Arnall

Vandiver
Ellis Arnall, Georgia's next Gov
ernor, charged over a slate-wide,
14-station television network that
former Governor Ernest Vandiver
is a $30,000-a-year “political
agent” of the I.&N Railroad, the
lessee of the state-owned W & A
Railroad, and that Vandiver is
paid by the L & N for two pur
poses: to keep the L&N from
paying state income taxes on the
profits from the W & A and to
obtain a new lease, favorable to
tlie I.&N and unfavorable to the
taxpayers, when the present one
expires in 1%9 during the term
of Georgia’s next Govenor.
Former Governor Arnall charged
that "while saving the I.&N taxes.
Governor Vandiver increased the
people’s taxes. Among these in
creases, he said, were:
The elimination of federal in
come tax payments as a deduction
from state income tax, enacted
when Vandiver was President of
the Senate; this cost the taxpay
ers $7,861,118 the first fiscal year.
The bracket system of state sale*
tax collection resulted in the pay
ment of nine per cent instead of
three per cent on small purchases.
This device cost the people of
Georgia more than $8,000,000 dtir
ing Vandiver's four years in office.
By advancing the schedule of
state income tax payments. Gov
ernor Vandiver, through legisla
tive enactment, made each indi
vidual pay five years’ taxes in
four. This tax increase took $15,-
804,722 more “from your pockets
and mine.”
“Governor Vandiver promised
the people that if they would elect
him Governor he would never de
segregate the schools. He deceived
the people. He said, ‘No, not one,
never, never, never. Blood will
flow in the streets. There are not
enough federal bayonets or fed
eral money to force me to back
down. I will go to jail first.’
“Governor Vandiver knew when
he promised this that he could
not defy the law of the land. He
knew when he made those pledges
he was not telling the people the
truth.”
State Highway Director Jamea
L. Gillis “is a czar who kuilda
political fences instead of high
ways,” Arnall said, “and Gov
ernor Ernest Vandiver is his cap
tive candidate.” The route of In
terstate 85 was changed from
Gainesville, Cornelia and Toccoa
to go through Vandiver's farm at
Lavonia. Acting on secret advance
information he bought critical
tracts of land across the Tugaloo
river in South Carolina and then
they ran the road through hia
land on both sides of the Tugaloo
rivrr.
Former Governor Vandiver has
not denied any of these charges.
Arnall said the issues in the
campaign are honesty in govern
