Congreuman Seymour Halpern
of New York, outstanding law
maker and a leading member of
the United States House of Rep
resentatives, will be the guest
speaker at Ahavath Achim Con
gregation’s fifth annual Israel
Bond Dinner, to be held at the
synagogue, 600 Peachtree Battle
Ave., N. W., on Wednesday even
ing, Oct. 27.
Announcement of Mr. Hal-
pern's forthcoming visit to At
lanta was made by Dr. Marvin
Goldstein, chairman, and Gerald
Cohen, vice chairman of the Con
gregation’s Israel Bond Commit
tee, who pointed out that the din
ner, which will commemorate Is
rael’s 17th year of statehood, is
expected to attract a record
crowd.
Mr. Halpern has been a mem
ber of the House Banking and
Currency Committee, the Veter
ans’ Affairs Committee, and the
Sub-Committee on International
Finance. From 1941 to 1954, he
served with distinction as a mem
ber of the New York State Sen
ate. Prior to that, he had served
as a personal aide to the late
Mayor Fiorello LaGuardla of
New York and as an assistant to
the President of the City Coun
cil.
Mr. Halpem's legislative ac
tivities in Congress have cover
ed a broad area of national and
international Issues, and many of
his proposals have been enacted
into law. He has been particular
ly active in matters affecting the
Middle Blast, and has achieved
recognition for his efforts in try
ing to bring about peace and jus
tice in that area.
He has been a leader in efforts
to, assure freedom of passage
through the Suez Canal for all
nations, to eliminate Arab boy
cotts and discriminatory barriers
against United States citizens and
businesses, and to prevent recip

aid to release funds for the
purchase of arms directed against
other nations which receive our

In making their announce
ment of the event, Dr. Goldstein
and Mr. Cohen stated: ‘‘Ahavath
Achim has since 1961 been in the
forefront of efforts to strengthen
Israel’s economic framework
through the Israel Bond drive.
During the past four years, the
members of the congregation
have purchased a total of ap
proximately $200,000 in Israel
Bonds. We anticipate that this
figure will rise to $250,000 by
the end of the year. This of
course is what was told at the
Congregation dinners alone. If
the purchases of members at
other occasions were included,
the figure would more than dou
ble.”
The Chairmen emphasized that
Ahavath Achim Congregation’s
effort for Israel Bonds Is an in
tegral part of the campaign of the
Greater Atlanta Committee for
State of Israel Bonds. They as
serted that the Israel Bond drive
is the key instrument for pro
viding vital investment capital
for Israel’s programs of economic
development and immigrant ab
sorption.
Both men underscored the fact
that, although a Dinner Commit

Etha Rosenberg of Savannah,
a student at Georgia Tech, was
among those attending the Stu

Chief action of the group was

for peaceful solution to the Is-

East.
SZO is the unified Zionist or

Mr. Rosenberg is active in SZO
on the Tech campus and at other
Southern colleges.
Two volunteer summer pro
grams to begin in 1966 were call
ed for at the convention by pres
ident Charles Kleinhaus. The
first project is to offer the serv
ices of experienced SZO members
to serve in small Jewish com
munities as educators and youth
leaders. The second is to provide
a Jewish framework for mem
bers planning to participate hi
civil rights projects. Mr. Klein-
haus said, “As student Zionists
we are all committed to better
ing the Jewish community in
America as well as in Israel . . ”
