“The Adult In
stitute of Jewish
Studies, which
is jointly spon
sored by the Bu
reau of Jewish
Education and
the Jewish Com
munity Center
will start the fall
semester on
Wednesday, Oc
tober 13,” it was announced by
Nathan Loshak, chairman of the
Institute Committee.
Theodore Freedman, southern
director of the Anti-Defamation
League of B’nai B’rith, will be
the featured speaker of the even
ing. Mr. Freedman is supervisor
of the A.D.L. offices in the south
ern states and also serves as di
rector for A.D.L.’s work in the
southwest. Formerly Mr. Freed
man was a member of the faculty
of the Richmond Professional In
stitute of the College of William
and Mary and of Shrivenham
American University in England.
Mr. Freedman will discuss
“The Jewish and Negro Commu
nities—Areas of Conflict and Co
operation”. “This is a timely top
ic”, Mr. Loshak pointed out,
“since the recent Los Angeles
riots in which Jewish property
was heavily damaged have again
prompted the question whether
anti-semitic motives played any
part in these instances.” In his
talk, Mr. Freedman will analyze
the involvement of the Jewish
community in the civil rights
movement and he will also at
tempt to clarify problems of Ne-
gro-Jewish relationships.
In addition, the convocation
will feature a musical program
entitled “Songs of Israel” which
will be presented by RONEN, a
newly organized cultural arts en
semble.
This is a group of six “Haver-
im,” consisting of a scientist, an
interior designer, two teachers, a
human relations consultant and
a housewife who have joined to
form this unique ensemble which
aims at bringing the folk culture
of Israel to Atlanta and other
southern Jewish communities.
“Ronen” will make its debut at
the opening night of the Institute
of Jewish Studies on Wednesday,
October 13, at 8:00 p.m. at the
Jewish Community Center, 1745
Peachtree Road.
Further information about
courses and registration can be
secured at the office of the Bu
reau of Jewish Education, 41 Ex
change Place S.E.; phone JA

Howard Succeeds Cuba as President
Jewish
The Annual Meeting of the At
lanta Jewish Community Coun
cil was held on Wednesday even
ing, September 29th, at the Jew
ish Community Center. Bernard
Howard was elected president
for the 1965-66 term. Mr. How
ard, a former vice-president of
the Jewish Community Council,
and an active campaigner in the
Jewish Welfare Fund, is now
serving as vice-president of the
Jewish Community Center. Re
elected as vice-presidents were
Mrs. Henry Caplan, Edward
Krick and William B. Schwartz,
Jr. M. William Brcman was re
elected secretary-treasurer.
An outstanding feature of the
meeting was the annual report
by Max M. Cuba, the retiring
president, who had served the
past three years. In his report
Mr. Cuba brought out that this
was the 20th anniversary of the
Council’s existence and he called
attention to its important role in
growth and development of the
Atlanta Jewish community.
Among the highlights of the
year’s activity of the Council he
mentioned the Leadership De
velopment Institute; the Central
Structure Study Committee; the
Aged Care Study; the Central
Communal Building Committee;
the Council’s sponsorship of Is
rael’s Independence Day Observ
ance; and the Council’s role in
encouraging the Jewish commu
nity’s participation in register
ing and voting in the elections.
M. C. Gettinger, Executive
Director, reviewed the work of
the Community Relations Com
mittee which concerned itself
with a number of issues includ
ing successful effort to extend
the Statute of Limitations for Na
zi criminals in Germany; the
problem of the continued use of
prayers in the public schools in
spite of the Supreme Court de
cision of more than two years
ago declaring this unconstitution
al; efforts of the Council in re
gard to Federal Legislation ef
fecting a change in the immigra
tion law; the Council’s role in op
posing the Sterilization Bill in
the Georgia Legislature in co
operation with the Catholic Ar
chdiocese; and the successful ef
fort of the Council to establish
Kosher catering facilities in the
Regency Hotel now being built
in the downtown area.
A brief report was given by
Max Rittenbaum, chairman
of the Central Structure Study
Committee, on the progress of
the merger study of the three
Community CounciVs Annual Meeting
Cuba Howard
central communal agencies.
Dr. Irving L. Greenberg, presi
dent of the Bureau of Jewish
Education, reported on the past
year’s and current activities of
the Bureau
Mrs. Harold Marcus, chairman
of the Committee on Calendar
Clearance and Coordination, re
ported on the work of her com
mittee and urged the cooperation
of all the organizations, especially
the men’s groups, in clearing ma
jor evpnts with the office.
Murray Kandel reported
on the recently held Eternal
Light Vigil in Washington, D. C.
which he and several others at
tended as representatives of the
Community Council. More than
10,000 representatives from all
parts of the country, including
non-Jews, participated in the Vi
gil which was designed to call
attention to the plight of Soviet
Jewry and urged Russia to cor
rect their discriminatory treat
ment of the Jews.
In presenting the report of the
Nominating Committee, chairman
M. William Brcman paid tribute
to Mr. Cuba for his outstanding
service as president of the Coun
cil the past three years. “During
his administration,” he said, “the
Council provided the kind of
leadership to the Jewish com
munity which gave it a sense of
balance and constructive repre
sentation and which earned the
respect as well of the general
community.”
