Vatican Explains Why Anti-Semitism
Deplored, Not Condemned
ROME (JTA)—A member of
the Secretariat for Christian
Unity, the Vatican body respon
sible for the text on the declara
tion on Jews, offered two reasons
for the decision by the Secretar
iat to substitute the milder word
“deplores” for the word “con
demns” with reference to anti-
Semitism contained in the orig
inal draft.
Replying to a question at the
American Bishops Press Panel of
the Ecumenical Council Father
Long, member of the Secretariat
on Christian Unity, said that, in
accordance with the “Modi” set
forth by the Council Fathers, the
word “condemn” is not used in
Council decrees or declarations.
He recalled that, at the beginning
of the Ecumenical Council, the
late Pope John XXIII had said
that there should be no “condem
nations” and “no anathemas.”
The other reason for the sub
stitution, Father Long said, was
the fact that the Church used
the stronger word only in con
demning “formal heresy.” It was
recalled by competent observers,
however, that the Holy Office
tentlon of the laws of Georgia, and It
further appearing, by Certificate of
the Secretary of State, that the name
“MODEL RACEWAYS OF
DECATUR, INC.”
Is not the name of any other existing
corporation now registered with Its
office,
IT IS ORDERED that petitioners be
Incorporated under the name, terms
and conditions contained in the fore
going peUUon.

ts) SAM Pim r rp McKENZIE
Judge, Fulton Superior Court
had used the word “condemn” in
a public document issued on
March 25, 1928 declaring that
the Holy See “condemns hatred
against the people once elected
by God.”
Possibilities were seen that the
Council may still restore the
word “deicide” in the final ver
sion of the declaration, and may
also strengthen the proposed
statement rejecting anti-Semitism
by expressly using the term
“condemn” raher than the milder
word “deplore.”
These possibilities were envis
aged as the rules to be in effect
when the “Jewish document”
comes up for open debate some
ROME (JTA)—The fourth ses
sion of the Ecumenical Council
started its fifth week, with the
issue of the Vatican declaration
on Jews anticipated to come up
for final voting on Thursday or
Friday.
American prelates were re
ported here as making a strong
attempt behind the scenes to se
cure the retention of the text of
the draft declaration which was
approved by a large majority of
the 2,200 cardinals and bishops
taking part in the Council’s ses
sion.
That text exonerated the Jews
of all times of the charge of dei
cide, and said that the Jews
should never be presented as a
“cursed” people.
The new version of the text,
which has been presented to this
session, eliminated the word
“deicide.”
The new version also has ano
ther important change. It merely
time in the week, were revealed
in detail by the Secretariat for
Christian Unity. Four “voting
questions” will be submitted in
connection with Part Four of the
overall Declaration, dealing with
the Jewish religion. Some of these
will concern omissions, some
will propose shifting of sentences.
In any event, it will be tech
nically possible for the prelates
to restore the word “deicide” if
thye deem that word important
enough. The change back to
“condemn” instead of “deplore”
regarding the Church’s rejection
of anti-Semitism may be left to
the discretion of the moderators.
“deplores” anti-Semitism, while
the version of last year said that
the Catholic Church “condemns”
bigotry.
As the time approaches when
the Ecumenical Council is to take
a final vote on the amended ver
sion—which came as a concession
to prelates from Arab lands and
to a small, hard-core conservative
group in the Curia—it becomes
obvious that the changes in the
text on Jews are arousing more
emotion than any other item dis
cussed by the Ecumenical Coun
cil during its three previous ses
sions.
Several American bishops are
strongly lobbying for the restora
tion of the words “deicide” and
“condemns.” If the amended text
will be opposed by just over one-
third of the 2,200 Council fathers
in the forthcoming vote this
week, then the text approved last
year will automatically remain
in force.
