Victory for Menachem Begin
Israelis See Histadrut
Elections as Blow to Mapai
TEL AVIV — (WUP) — The
results of the recent Histadrut
elections, according to the ma
jority of newspaper editorials
published here, have shown a
new trend in thepolitical life of
the nation in which Mapai,
hitherto the leading party, sus
tained the greatest losses, while
the Herut faction known as
Gahal emerged strong.
Ha’aretz, Israel’s leading daily,
gives a large part of the credit
for Gahal’s achievement to Mena
chem Begin, head of the Herut
party. However, the paper calls
for a careful examination of the
reasons for the low percentage
of votes cast and expresses regret
that “the elections to the Histad
rut convention were conducted,
in fact, as a part of the Knesset
election campaign.”
Haboker termed “the election
results intoxicating” and added:
‘‘we must not lose our heads over
the victory but continue our ef
forts to explain the Gahal plat
form in preparation for the forth
coming Knesset elections. It must
be borne in mind that neither the
Alignment nor Rafi will reconcile
themselves to this defeat.”
Davar said that “the results
endanger stability in the Histad
rut. As far as one party or an
other is concerned, this may be
advantage, but from the overall
Histadrut point of view, it is a
British KKK Members

regrettable development, which
confronts the Histadrut institu
tions with difficult tests.”
Dr. Joseph KLarman, leading
Herut spokesman, issued a special
statement on the new turn of
events in Israel. He declared that
“all circles are agreed that the
election results indicate a new
turn in Israel’s political and
economic life. There has never
been such a united public opinion
in Israel as we find since the
Histadrut elections. All parties
without exception are in agree
ment: the result of the elections
constitutes a defeat for Mapai
and is a rare achievement on the
part of Gahal (Gush Herut
Liberalim).”
