An American Woman in Israel
Gentle Camels - and Cars
by LILA REISMAN
The people of Israel are the
bravest in the world. They have
to be. To venture out in the snarl
of traffic calls for pure heroism .
. . on both the.
part of a driver
and a pedestrian
Paris used to»
claim the titlejj
of champion
this s p e c i f i cj]
area, but I dare]
say that therel
isn’t an Israelis
around on four
wheels or less
who cannot snatch that “plum”
singlehanded for Israel!
Unless De Gaulle violently ob
jects, I can comfortably predict
that Israel’s man-behind-the-
wheel will outdo even the most
intrepid Parisienne cab-driver.
Not that the driver here doesn’t
have to go through a most ela
borate training course and vig
orous test before he is allowed
his permit to operate his vehicle,
but when it comes to his per
formance on the road, there is
almost no relationship to the
hours he spent with his driving
teacher.
you find yourself laughing over
the gesticulations of your com
pact-car-colleagues.
Please don’t get the idea that
this new outcropping of more cars
on the road has not been dealt
with by the municipalities. In Tel
Aviv and environs, beautiful
young policewomen are now sta
tioned at busy street corners and
while the snarls before were once
due to the driver's ineptitude . . .
it is now compounded by the
backward glances taken by our
dashing motorists ... at, of all
people . . . the lovely policeforce!
But don’t get me wrong . . .
squealing brakes, honking horns
and all ... I merely take a deep
anesthetizing whiff of the diesel
exhaust fumes and chug merrily
on. Israel . . . it’s come a long
way from the days of the gentle
camel!

I’m certain that if I was to stop
a driver and ask him of the inner
workings of his car, he could rat
tle off the purpose of every single
wire which normally only our
trusted garage mechanics can de
cipher.
However, a thing like a white
line down the middle of a street
or a “no left turn from a right
lane” just hasn’t entered his
mind. On my maiden voyage
from North Tel Aviv to Ramat
Gan, I was almost reduced to
tears from the many frustrations
of trying to read the minds of
my fellow highwaymen. All of
the normal “rules of the game”
upon which I have relied for lo
these past twenty years that I
have been driving, apparently
had no relationship to the bump
er crop of drivers now jockeying
their way along the high and low
roads of Israel.
Playing lay - psychologist, I
could come to the conclusion that
all the aggressions that have ever
been bottled up by an “oppressed
people” are daily given vent in
this manner . . . and that could
explain the system.
Or, similarly, I could justify
the bicyclist or Vesper operator’s
attitude of deserving as much
room on the road as any car . . .
as a result of the “democratic
spirit” of the Israeli. As for the
pedestrian who sallys forth with
out one whit of concern for the
traffic whipping by, I could chalk
that up to the Israeli’s supreme
confidence in the strength of
“one over many.”

Whatever the reasoning may
be, it is the closest thing to a
Mack Sennett movie and “politi
cally speaking,” if I.evi Eshkol
would ask me, I’d suggest Social
ized Car Repair as the next big
program for the State! Now, one
could get their dander up over
this affair . . . but even the most
aggravating situations can be and
usually are dealt with bv merely
shouting out the car window to
the offending driver or brazen
pedestrian. There has already
built up a specific Hebrew vocab
ulary designed for all kinds of
events with which one comes into
contact on the roads. The choice
epigram to-date is a cutting
“Chamor" (Donkey!) which must
be said with the proper intona
tion and accompanying sneer. I
have found that to be one of my
most spectacular retorts to ve
hicle and man alike . . . and
frankly, it beats fuming under
one’s breath or stewing in one’s
own anger. Besides, everyone else
is doing it and before long, even
